Broken Pieces

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Most of us will never have to endure the suffering of the hostages held and abused by Hamas. History will carry this historical time through one form or another… just as the ancients did.
Broken pottery was sometimes used as writing material. Usually this would not be for more formal composition, but for mundane uses that might not need archiving—sort of a “Post-It-Note” of antiquity. These are referred to as “ostraca” (plural; singular is “ostracon”). The ancient writer would locate a suitable piece of broken ceramic and compose the necessary data on it. These ostraca might serve as receipts for goods received (a collection of these was found from Ahab’s Samaria; cf. Avigad 1304 for photo of two ostraca; see Suriano for translations of several of them), names or lists of names (cf. the “lots” at Masada; cf. Yadin 811-12), or occasional messages to be delivered to some person or destination (see photo below). (See the receipts written on sherds that helped identify Naboth’s vineyard.)

Poem Artwork

 Broken Pieces

Like an ancient excavation of life

An archaeological museum of human suffering

Where the ghosts of middle east wars and peace

Continue watching attempts for diversified societies

To live a peaceful existence

But…

Like a pottery sherd found deep in a dig

Middle East history leaves behind’s many layers

Of scribed history

The often onerous-weight of typological chronology

Clearly showing the continuous rivalry

Hate

And “to vanquish” mindsets.

Hope for change continues among the populous

As hostile minds clash over who has the biggest war package

As deterrent.

No…

It’s not the size of your package that matters

It’s the size of your heart

Your understanding the heart-mind coalition

Its innate nature to harmonize

And be of peaceful mind.

It’s long overdue

 Give militaristic power and money

A rest.

As much as Muslim societies hate Western societies, they hate each other more based on the countless wars Down through the centuries wage by one regime in the Middle or another. But such has been the world for a very long time.

I like how you threw in the artifacts found by archaeologist and how the translations help discern what life was like back in those times. Some mundane. Some horrific.

Thanks for the encouraging words at the end, but when it comes to war, all human sensitivity seems to be thrown out the window.

It was a big draw-in for me reading the ‘ostracon’ introduction; and what writer of words on backs of window envelopes, paper bags, napkins, their hands…doesn’t like hearing of these pottery post-its? “Of scribed history
The often onerous-weight of typological chronology” . . weight with its double meaning: importance and physical heaviness. I like your using harmonizing and peacefulness right before the last two lines. It was an effective juxtaposition. I’m with you….~~ djl

A fine entreaty but one that will probably be ignored until the end of time, especially from now on with all the weapons we the world have at our disposal. It's a complicated world and getting more complicated. I see little scope for hope when it comes to the "way of the world".
