Personal Prisons

I.

Night in Manhattan pretends to offer escape,
the subway’s last rumble fading into distance,
another frenetic cab symphony of honks ricocheting off a glass tower,
the pulse of sirens slicing the dark.

You tell yourself the noise is a lullaby,
yet once you lie down,
the mind begins its own restless traffic.
Shadows slip beneath the door,
old fears drift in like late‑night taxis,
personal prisons humming with their engines on,
waiting for you to notice you never really left them.

II.
But morning rises with a different rhythm.
The city clatters awake,
deliveries banging metal gates,
steam grates hissing their warm confession,
voices layering atop one another like unpredictable music.
What once feels disruptive
can turn pleasing if you tilt your attention just slightly
and allow honesty to prevail disguised in noise,
embracing integrity in the world as simply being itself.

You avoid certain streets,
step wide of those whose storms might swallow your balance,
and walk among the wanderers of Central Park,
the drifters, the dreamers, the quiet survivors.
Their sadness echoes your own,
yet woven inside it is a strange permission to keep going.

III.
Nature in the Park whispers without the slightest need to impress you.
The trees, bare or blooming, tell the truth
in whatever form they’re in that day.
The rocks hold their ground with no performance, no apology.
Even the wind sounds genuine brushing through the branches,
a soft percussion that never pretends.

You sit on a bench and realize every element around you
is effortlessly honest, while you struggle to keep your own truths steady.
Still, the city does not punish you for trying.
It simply waits, patient as the lake reflecting the sky.

IV.
Lunch arrives as a small salvation.
A simple sandwich,a moment’s rest,
and a dog with mismatched eyes
trots up as if summoned by hope itself.
You share your sandwich, crumbs, crust, kindness,
and his tail wags so hard it shakes a little laughter loose from your chest.

The prison walls soften.
Depressions of every kind, the heavy, the racing, the quietly gray,
all seem to pause, as if acknowledging a shift you hardly noticed.
And then the surreal happens:
the skyscrapers tilt,

gently,

respectfully,
not falling,

but bowing,
as though the entire city has recognized your effort, your persistence,
your fragile but growing belief that even here,
in the noise and chaos and wandering souls,
you can find a thousand unexpected ways to step,

if only for a moment,
outside your personal prison,

accepting another opportunity for freedom.

‘Personal Prison’ is an apt caption for this contrasting of ‘thought’ vs. ‘awareness.’ Good way to describe our ‘mental motors’ idling on a log-jammed freeway — prisons “..humming with their engines on.” I like how well you illustrated the escape from the thought of prison, our fears and self-analysis, involving a sandwich with a grateful canine. It’s looking at the details of being ‘awake’ and ‘aware’ of the grim and grime of dread, fatigue, and displacement and yet realizing that the cacophony is its own kind of music and that nature herself, sitting next to that voluminous fizz, is a sanctuary chamber existing in the middle of the honking chaos. Mind vs. Moment. ~~ djl
