Time, the loudest, most silent stalker. This is actually a take-off on a much better poem written by a friend of mine. Portrait of the artist as Time.

Poem Artwork

                   Quicksand

When, near the end of my days --

the hourglass weeping

its final gold tears --

still gripped in anonymity's

pathetic vise, still

gaping at the likes

of Aiken, Keats and Rimbaud,

having whored about

trying to please both

Calliope and Baal,

who will see into the blue heart

of this ruby-shod wannabe

mired in the eye of mediocrity,

hopelessly scrabbling

and foraging for the

world's finest phrase,

so fervently needing to be known

as to drown while quite alive,

peeling a mottled apple

for some hungry child?

You may think not but I can relate to what you express very vividly, Juli. I find the whole offering particularly poignant and the graphic image powerfully enhances the effectiveness of the verses. Thank you for sharing. Love and best wishes,

Often it feels like our words and our value as writers seem to be trivialized by those around us but to write is a convocation that cannot be ignored. If it leads to fame in this life...fantastic, if it leads to fame when we are gone...great, but if it only leads to fame in our own minds...that's Kewl.

it is not "the world's perfect phrase" that will endure Julianza -- it is the lore, the record, of the epic struggle to achieve that will endure and garner kudos and recognition -- peace and love my dear friend -- Jon Michael

Julie, I like the desperation here: how ironic that fame (or
recognition) should arrive after our ashes have been scattered
on the wind. Question: fetishing? -gene.

Nicely done, Julie! Love the imagery.
