If Talent Were Contagious

If talent were contagious
I’d store all that I could gain
From Milton, Poe, and Shakespeare
And that fellow called Mark Twain.

I’d study every style and genre
I’d read twixt every line
In search of how their sleight of hand
Converts the simple to sublime.

No mark of punctuation
Would escape my eagle eye
I’d lift up every comma
I’d study every where and why.

What makes their words so special
What makes their thoughts unwind
Into heavenly streams of magic
That lifts the reader’s mind?

Alas, my days are numbered
The end will soon be here
My saddlebags are empty
My quest is in low gear.

Dickinson, Keats and Kipling
You wrote with style and grace
Can you spare me just a moment
And help me win this race?

What’s the secret to your talent
How did you write so well
Can I find it in a bottle
Is it somewhere in your spell?

Believe that you can do it
I heard their voices say
Stop when you are satisfied
And then just walk away.

Greetings to Author Poet Edward Phillips.

Creativity, Bliss and Wisdom.

It is said that "Wise is the one that recognizes greatness."

"If Talent Were Contagious" shows the vision of one that is accompanied by the Muses, and blessed by Apollo.

This aurific Scroll written with platimum letters, decorated with brilliant cut pieces of diamond cerebration, made its way to constellation Beauty to glow forever as a lesson of literary respect.

Viva the Poet!

In reverent appreciation,

I find your poem both poignant and realistic. The great authors of the past were accompanied by many others we do not know who struggled with writing and never made it to the point where they were published, or if published, recognized. The current era of the Internet opens writing to a whole new realm, leading to many more writers easily entering the field because they do not have to write on paper manuscripts and submit them to the few places that might (or might not) publish them, with little or no guarantee of readership.

Even great writers like Mark Twain made their living by writing newspaper articles and whatever they could to get by until that great novel, like Huckleberry Finn, came along in his 60s.

I think their secretwas that they never sought after fame, they opened their mind's ears and swallowed up all what the universe whispered to them. Your poem leaves me curious my friend, what if indeed, what if it were contagious? Great thoughts Edward!

Believing in yourself is paramount for success in almost any endeavor we are told repeatedly, and I feel strongly that is a truism. Happy to find another poet question things around him.
