Addictions

The sickness of dependency
comes in many forms
Whether your mind and body are controlled
by pills or food or sex or ideologies
You have forfeited your free will
to others or to substances.
Breaking free from them
requires enough will
in reserve to overcome
the tentacles of enslavement.
If you let others think for you
you are a slave.
If you let pleasures mask your pains
you are a slave
But you are hopeless only
If you give up.

Wonderful. I really needed to read this today as I'm dealing with a member of my family with an addiction. Perfect words, my friend.

A very inspiring write here. Addiction does indeed take many forms, but none are insurmountable unless you wish them to be.

Addiction comes in many forms
Some are good and some are bad
It's a pity when pleasure masks the pain
For it's the only pleasure I ever had

Dammit! Does that mean I have to give up this addiction I have to writing? I feel so depressed I think all have another drink… What time is it? 10 am? Good time to start. ;-)

Ron

Serially, you made some very fine points about being enslaved to addictions.

Your pearls of wisdom is once again on the offer. Thank you for this, especially the line 'the tentacles of enslavement ' can very well be a title for a film or a book on the topic.JK

Thank you Edward for sharing your inspiring poem
that usher in a new perspective the old problem
of dependency...a struggle with will power and the absence
of self-control.
But there also is...an independent "state of mind".
I know...never easy...takes effort and perseverance,
stamina, optimism and problem solving skills...to choose
to advance or retreat...cope with times when it is
absolutely must-no-ever-consider loosing the grip on
your own leadership...
All it takes is...lose a little faith...reduce some
enthusiasm...adopt a healthy dose of cynicism...find out
the priorities...and ...thank God for the Global Financial
Crisis.
After the economical meltdown...came the opportunity
to...re-evaluate...re-assess and ask the crucial question
...If all the energy we...human beings...are investing
in the material world (house, car, enough money, status
symbol)...is really worth it?
...If the trust (in institution, authorities) taken
for granted for so long...we placed in the hands
of domineering addicts?
Addicts...that struggle to balance the power and professional
integrity and....steal...as a means of supporting their habits...
My humble answer is....slow down and ...just...be be be be be...
independent mind...

Sadly... some addictions are cause by the drugs itself. To use one drug to cure one thing, and then would bring addiction to another. This will never end. Humans are only unknowingly used as guinea pigs.

So true. One of the worst sources of addictions is the drug companies and doctors giving people addictive prescription drugs. Nice write.
