Twilight

You know it when you see it
When Thursday becomes Wednesday
You know it when you hear it
When laughter becomes nostalgia
You know it when you feel it
When rain drops moisten your soul.

How wide the gap
How narrow the time
How sweet the sounds
Of distances traveled
Since days of youth
Of children playing.

Do not listen too long to those voices
That appeal to dangers and to smallness
To diets and to fears
Rely instead on the soft glow of music
And on voices of kindness
That add beauty to your years.

There is only a time to live
A time to reach out
A time to love—
Accept this gift with gratitude
With pleasure and
With resolve.

Do not ask to know your state of wealth
For surely if you must
It will sadden all your days of health
In measured doses and such;
The end will never find you
If you leave your cares behind
Let your compass always guide you
The sun’s position at dawn or twilight
Is just a state of mind.

How beautifully said. Too many do not know these feelings and it is sad

This is one of those rare poems that speaks deepest to me. Many have touched me but only a rare few speak directly to me the way this poem does. Very well done!

A yin and yang treatise of what man's worry over "time" is all about. A great reminder that man invented time. Where might the psyche be today were we but living the interminable sunrises and sunsets of nature, oblivious of what's behind, indifferent to what's ahead, only concerned with the moment now. Now. Some of us find such a thought very comforting in a world bent on beating some invented clock.

That last line is prophetic about how the and will be very much like the beginning. Here's to many dawns to come.

Your reference to "diets and to fears," is intriguing because I don't see you involved in either.

Those of us in the twilight years read this interest, since everyone had a different "take" on the twilight years and it has been a subject for the poet's scrutiny for many a century. I like to think of it this way: what is twilight for some is sunrise for others, all in the eternal cycle. Who knows but we may come back to watch yet another sunrise. Isn't that what you suggested in your last two lines, leaving the reader with a feeling of hope. Thanks. John
