The Sad Facts
Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide, more than 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized at animal shelters each and every year.
Many also believe that these are all animals born in America’s streets or alleys, and that there is something ‘wrong’ with them.
In reality, far too often today, they are the unwanted offspring of someone’s cherished family pet, even purebreds.
Maybe someone's dog or cat got out and roamed around the neighborhood just that one time, or maybe their litter of pups or kittens was even intentional, but efforts to find good homes for them failed.
Maybe the pet owner doesn’t even know about the homeless dog or cat that their own dog or cat impregnated, or about the now starving and homeless litter of pups or kittens living in their very own alley, or under their neighbor’s abandoned vehicle, or in the nearby forest preserve.
Still, the result is the same: millions of homeless pets each and every year have to be euthanized because there are far more dogs and cats in America than there are people willing to provide them with loving homes.
And even if you do find homes for your own pet's puppies or kittens, that still means that there are far fewer homes available to take in other homeless pets from nearby animal shelters.
Spay/Neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective, method of birth control for dogs and cats.
Hurricane Katrina’s Statistics
We rescued thousands and thousands of ‘left behind’ pets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and horrendously, over 80 percent of these animals were not spayed or neutered at the time of rescue.
And today, almost four years after the storm, thousands of their offspring are still aimlessly wandering the Gulf Coast, and most of them are still horrendously hungry and homeless.
Today’s Abysmal Home Foreclosures
America’s skyrocketing pet overpopulation problem has now abysmally been even worsened by today’s extremely sad, ever rising, home foreclosure rates. People are now abandoning their homes, and their pets, in record numbers today.
And very sadly, thousands of these newly abandoned ‘foreclosure’ pets are not spayed or neutered either.
My latest dog, Little Jack, was apparently a victim of a home foreclosure, and he was ‘dumped’ by someone in a park. He also wasn’t neutered. The first thing that I did when I took him off the streets was whisk him off to my veterinarian for a medical check-up and a neutering procedure.
Little Jack is one of the lucky ones; there are now far too many just like him, being dumped all across America; and very sadly, in many cases, producing yet more unwanted, homeless offspring.
Help Your Community and Yourself
Spaying or neutering your own pet means that your animal and its potential offspring won't contribute to America’s ever growing population of unwanted and unloved pets.
You can also enjoy your spayed or neutered pet more. Female pets that have been spayed do not go into heat. You won't have the mess that comes with the female reproductive cycle, or the boisterous, noisy, male suitors. Spaying and neutering may also reduce the risk of certain health problems, offering you more years with your beloved dog or cat.
It's Safe and Effective
Licensed veterinarians perform spay/neuter operations while the pet is under anesthesia. Depending on your pet's age, size, and health, he or she will stay at your veterinarian's office for a few hours or a few days. Depending upon the procedure, your pet may need stitches removed. Your veterinarian can fully explain these spay and neuter procedures to you.
And if you have a new puppy or kitten, please don't wait. Pets can become parents much sooner than you think. Early age Spay/Neuter is safe and effective, so talk to your veterinarian about it at your pet's very first visit.
Financial Assistance Is Available
Spay/neuter surgery carries a one-time cost that is relatively small, when you consider the benefits. It's a small price to pay to make sure your pet's unwanted offspring aren't euthanized. And for pets living in homes with limited income, reduced cost spay/neuter procedures are often available.
Many humane societies across America now work with hundreds of veterinarians to offer subsidized and affordable spay/neuter services in veterinarians’ offices, in specialized clinics, and even in customized mobile units that bring safe, effective, spaying and neutering into America's neighborhoods.

As I was reading, I could not help but think about the J.D. DILEMMA - then, as I scrolled down to the bottom, sure enough there he was - stating that '...they were going to put me down...'
But, to my dismay, I then realized it was really a post by his Alter-Ego RUFUZ! BUMMER!
Anyway, I would like to nominate YOU - PEE-WEE - to be the President of the Chicago Chapter of The LET'S SPAY MATLACK Society!
This action would be in the interest of all concerned - let me Count the Ways:
1. Apparently, NEUTERING him did NOT work - even tho' your MA & Pa paid good money to a transient part-time vetinarian, who was a part-time Medic in Nam and therefore a Double VET! Accordingly, J.D. was recently proposing to SELL HIS BODY ON THE STREETS OF DOWNTOWN SEA ISLE CITY - many citizens found that thought to be quite REPULSIVE!
2. ERGO, it would seem that the only HUMANE alternative would be to have him SPAYED - this necessary procedure might serve a dual purpose - the Elimination of his short-term "MONTHLIES" - which result in his BITCHING & MOANING - as well as the possible avoidance of his long-term PMS! Trust me, this should be avoided at ALL COSTS!
3. To That End - and as President, you should establish a FIX MATLACK FUND - set up a PAYPAL ACCOUNT - and within MINUTES, Millions of readers, all across the World can each Donate ONE PARTIALLY COPPER PENNY EACH - let's see now - 1,000,000 X 1c = $10,000 !
