In the past when I heard people use the word 'intimacy', I used to think it meant either physical/sexual closeness or a type of 'touchy feeling' interaction where I had to give up my sense of self and say things in an unsafe environment. I have since learned, however, that intimacy is much more simple and profound than anything I had previously believed.
Intimacy, in short, is the connection that is established between living beings when communication is open and pure. When two beings understand and relate to each other they are creating intimacy...they literally resonate in the connection. Human beings create intimacy through conversation and physical touch. When intimacy is broken the result is conflict, which can be viewed energetically as the attempt to create intimacy through violent means.
Couples, families, societies, nations, companies and organizations are all vehicles to express life-affirming intimacy. When the human beings involved do not have the skills to create a connection with one another the result is divorce, abuse, inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and war. Where there is intimacy there is peace and progress. When intimacy breaks down there is dissonance and friction.
I have come to believe that if each of us could learn how to be intimate with the world, to share ourselves openly and safely with one another, we could create in a way that is both enjoyable and powerful. Think about this today. Can you share yourself more openly with those around you? Might it be possible to hear others more deeply such that you can create a connection? This is all it takes to create intimacy...willingness to express and to hear. I have personally found it incredibly powerful and affirming. Try it for yourself and see what happens!
