Meditation: The Power of Your Words
In the Bible, James 3:10 (ESV) says, "From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so." We, as Christians, must reflect on the power of our words and their source.
When we use our mouths to praise God and pray, we honour Him as instructed in Psalm 34:1 (ESV): "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth." However, we must also be aware that we can speak words that hurt and harm others from the same mouth. This contrast between blessings and curses reminds us of Matthew 15:18-19 (ESV): "But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander."
As Christians, we should examine our hearts and seek to cleanse them, for it is from our hearts that our words originate. Let us strive to have hearts filled with love, kindness, and compassion, aligning our words with the teachings of Jesus, who said in Matthew 22:39 (ESV), "You shall love your neighbour as yourself."
May this meditation convict us to change and use our mouths to spread God's love and blessings rather than curses and hurtful words.
