Who do I fight with most? The voice in my head!

Who do I fight with most? It’s not my spouse, siblings, children, friends, or even the crazy phone callers. It’s this voice that lives in my head. I don’t think I’m crazy, but who knows? I don’t know where this voice comes from. Sometimes it’s helpful, but most of the time it causes trouble.

For example, I’ve left the house feeling perfectly fine, when this voice started up with, “Did you lock the back door?”

Suddenly I found myself talking back to the voice. “Of course I did.”

“Are you sure?” the voice comes back with.

Now I’m confused. In my younger day I had more confidence and wouldn’t let that voice bother me. Now I must admit sometimes I am forgetful, so I turned the car around went home to check the door. Of course It was locked. I could just hear that voice laughing.

Last night that little guy in my head started up again. Exhausted, I plopped on my bed ready for a peaceful night’s sleep only to be woken up to that voice shooting out lists of things I needed to do. I finally got out of bed and added the list to the reminder part of my phone, just to quiet the voice down.

Sometimes that voice and I have outright fights over things like, “Should I go, or should I stay; should I call or should I wait until he calls; should I buy it, or should I save the money?”

I have to admit there are times when the voice in my head is helpful. Like, yesterday when it said, “Dummy, hold on to the railing before you fall down these steep steps and crack your head open.”

Of course the voice could have been a little nicer. I wish I knew how that voice got into my head. Before earphones and cell phones I would be afraid to tell you about this voice in my head because you would put me in a straightjacket. But today, everyone walks around talking and ringing with a voice in their heads—real or not.

Do you have a little voice in your head that causes trouble?

I agree. It seems like my short-term memory is starting to play tricks. And my little voice says, "Did you do that?" And I really can't remember if I did or not. Some of it comes from all of the added distractions that technology brings into our lives. These distractions require focus. Since most of us can only focus on one thing at a time, in spite of what we think we can do, we tend to forget even the most obvious. That little voice, when we are in a calmer situation, remembers for us.

This is so true. We all battle with the voice in our head. Sometimes, that voice is even right! Char Wexler really captured what we all think!
