PREFACE. I happen to live in one of the highest crime areas for a population its size in the United States, notwithstanding the fact that the police are doing a good job of mitigating crime there. I have learned the hard way why witnesses do not want to be involved with the police in an effort to help their communities. They may be treated like suspects themselves, identified to persons of interest, threatened, and even killed. I am posting the following narrative absent any personal identifiers because I'm certain that, despite their good intentions, people are put In harm's way in the same manner that I have been. Since I may be harmed or murdered for trying to be helpful to myself and my community, I have placed the original document with identifiers in the hands of one of the few people who care about someone of my age and circumstances.. Perhaps the high officers in my case know very well that the man who threatened and defamed me and others is just a harmless bully, but I have no way of knowing that for sure because they have not provided me with any information, leaving me in the lurch under threat of having a bullet put in my head.

GYM BULLY BULL?

“I’m going to put a bullet in your head!” the gym bully muttered as I passed by him in the fitness club I have loved for over fifteen years.

“What?”

“I’m going to shoot you in the head!” he repeated and glared at me viciously.

“Why?”

“I saw your brother wearing a dress in the fucking locker room.”

“I don’t have a brother here. What are you talking about?”

“I said I am going to put a bullet in your head.”

“You saw a man in a dress? Maybe he was going to that parade. They are having, what do you call it, a gay thing ....”

“Fag Day! A fucking faggot pissed on the floor. I ordered him to put his damn dick over the urinal.”

He kept glaring at me with beady eyes as if he wanted to kill me on the spot. I was tempted to tell him about the candy penis stand I saw at the gay celebration and recommend that he go over there and try sucking on a chocolate or banana penis to pacify himself, but I desisted because I am going on 80-years old and am weakening despite my workouts. Besides, I do not have a gun. Now I am thinking of getting one, or maybe an ice pick; my father carried an ice pick and stuck it in a man when he was attacked when he was 85.

The gym bully had tried to show me his gun the day before, reaching in a threatening manner into his crotch area while sitting on the leg press. I did not look to see what he was fondling. I believed him and was not amused. He looked crazy. I supposed he needed medications.

His behavior was nothing new except his direct death threat. He had been banned from the gym, a couple of years before, for threatening members and using abusive language. He confronted me back then in a bullying manner several times, but I let it slide. I was polite and did my best to say something positive to him. I suppose he perceived that as weakness.

It is none of my business that half or more of the male members are gay. The gym is famous for that, and he seemed to favor them to their face and then badmouth them behind their backs, calling them “sissies” and “faggots,” and that is not to mention the “niggers” he hates.

“You a weakling, a pussy,” he said after I first met him. I told him, no, I had not served in the military. He told me he had killed hundreds of Vietnamese, was captured, put in a cage and tortured for two months, and that had turned him into a “sociopath.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have no feelings for people. I could kill you right now and not be sorry at all. If I did not have a woman to take care of, I would waste some people right away. Here, take a look at this, I did this in Africa after I got out of Nam.

He showed me images on his cellphone of corpses on the ground and in burned-out cars.

“These people are unarmed. They were murdered,” I observed.

“No problem. I was a mercenary. We were paid to kill them.”

Then he proudly related how he had murdered two men when he got back to the U.S:

“I was in the yard. They drove by and said something. I yelled after them to come say it to my face. They put the car in reverse, came back, got out of the car, and I killed them both on the spot. I was sent to prison, where I killed another man.”

Well, it was not long before the fitness club members started talking to one another about this man. One gay man, who notices every detail including but not limited to spots and lint on clothes and gum stuck on exercise machines, said the bully’s woman had bruises. We observed that the number of persons killed, the place where they were killed, and the time served in prison seemed vary, so we pretty much wrote him off as a braggart and liar. Yet the photos of him with others in their black belts did not appear to be fake. He said he was an umpteenth degree black belt, an expert in muay thai, which, he was careful to note, “was invented by a woman,” adding that the only martial arts instructor he admired at the gym was a bull dike. His own version of the martial arts technique, he claimed, was not for sport, but to kill.

“The objective is never to fight, but to kill right away or to run away. I can show you, for twenty-five dollars, three moves, any one of which will kill someone immediately.”

An airline pilot said he paid the fee for the lesson and it was worth it. However, a karate expert at the gym laughed and said he could, for fifty dollars, teach someone how to immediately kill anyone trying to make those moves.

The bully was not around the gym for a couple of weeks. On his return, he related how he had been out of state buying heavy weapons for the apocalypse soon to come. He claimed civil war was imminent, so people would have to fight for food, and he would have no problem killing people at the Publix for his supplies. That seemed absurd because weapons can be had everywhere, so why travel far?

All this seemed rather childish and sickening to me. I started avoiding the man, as did others, and then he was banned by the club management. A note was put on his account, to the effect that he could not come back due to threats and derogatory comments.

Much to the dismay of members who came regularly in the afternoon, he was let back into the gym a couple of years later, apparently after being kicked out of another gym. He had promised to be nice, to keep to himself, and not speak with members unless spoken to. That lasted about two weeks.

He harassed the wrong weightlifter over a machine while he was working out. The young man read him the riot act. He harassed him again at the bike rack.

“I told him to back off or I would crush him like a cockroach. He started shaking like a coward, took the big chain off his bike and rode off.”

“He told me one day that he has that huge chain to beat people’s heads in.”

“He represents himself as a combat veteran. Get me his name and I will have him checked out with the military. He may be stealing valor if he’s benefiting from lying about military service.”

“He threatened to shoot me in the head the last time he saw me because there was a man in a dress in the locker room.”

“He sees you dancing in the studio so assumes you are gay.”

“Was King David gay? I tried to get his name from the management, but they are not talking. I alerted the Chief of Police.”

“Surely they will give you his name so you can protect yourself. I don’t want to be involved, but I can have him checked out.”

I reached out to member services for the man’s identity.

“Please be discreet with this information as I do not want to have to arm myself in my neighborhood to defend myself against the "war "veteran" let back into the gym despite his terroristic threatening of other members and the former manager. Apparently he has severe psychological problems and is subject to free floating anger which have gotten worse lately as expressed by hate speech and now by overt threat. I may have a Intelligence Detective contact you for his personal information. Be careful what you say to him because if he associates it with his behavior today, he may come after me in my own home.”

I received an email from a veteran Intelligence Detective in the Chief of Police’s office. I related my concerns to him:

“I let the head of member services know,” I said. “He’s been around a long time and is aware of this guy. The club management is always leery about identifying people, and I do not blame them. You may remember the manager and assistant manager were murdered by an irate trainer at another club.

“I know.”

“There was a shooting at another one a few weeks ago. I just want to know who he is. If he appeared to be just a blowhard, I would try to ignore him. It's his representation that he has a gun on him that alarms me. After all, people go around threatening to shoot people in the head all the time, but seldom do.”

“We can have a talk with him if you like,” said the Intelligence Detective sympathetically. “You should not have to go through this.”

I intimated that I might get a lawyer to obtain a protection order, but I had no direct witness to his threat to put a bullet in my head. Besides, people get killed after getting restraining orders.

“Yes, they do. It is up to you. We can contact him.”

“Please don’t. Let me know who he is. That is enough for now.”

“Okay.”

The Intelligence Detective called me again a few hours later. His helpful tone had changed. I felt like a suspect.

“Have you complained about this man before?” he asked in an accusatory tone. I started to get angry.

“No, I have not. I did send an email to the Chief of Police. You know, I was thinking, I have a friend in D.C. who was threatened, and….”

“Is it the same person?” he asked dismissively.

“No, but my point is that the police put her off until an outstanding warrant was discovered, then they picked the guy up right away. That took care of the problem without identifying her and putting her in immediate danger. I’m just saying, find out who this guy is, if he is for real, maybe there is a warrant, and that would take care of the situation without endangering me.”

The Intelligence Detective was not interested. Maybe he was just having a hard day.

The very next day the bully announced at the gym that the Intelligence Detective had called him on the phone, and that I had complained about him.

I had noticed that he had been circulating in the club, talking to people at length. A very loud conversation resounded in the gym between the person of interest and two muscle men, and I wondered if it was for my benefit.

The behavior was nothing new. Some members are afraid to go anywhere near where he's at so they're deprived of the use of "his” area of the gym, yet at other times he sucks up to the very people he's defaming. 

“"Fucking faggot!" was the key phrase, repeated several times with glances in my direction.

I figured it would be best to address the Intelligence Detective in writing in case I am killed, so I sent off this message:

“Intelligence Detective, I understand that I have been identified, and I hope not by you. As I mentioned, that was not my wish because it puts me in danger. As said, my objective was simply to find out who this man is to know if he is as dangerous as he presents himself so I can take further steps if necessary. I want you to know that I really appreciate your effort. I understand you called him yesterday, and he related that to people standing by and referred to me. So I guess this is equivalent to a restraining order, which, as we discussed, is the sort of thing that gets a lot of people killed. But if he's a phony, I guess that doesn't apply.

“Regarding my statement that I had not previously complained, I did inform a police officer that this man said he had multiple high-powered weapons in a closet, which he said he had gotten on a trip to the far north, getting ready for the apocalypse, but our opinion was that it was just bull. There are plenty of weapons for sale around South Florida as you know.

“I wonder if you could have him text you the images of the men women and children he shows around and says he killed as a mercenary, or at least give me his last name or other identifiers, because I would like to check with the military authorities about his valor claims, states as to his alleged prison records, and federal law enforcement as to whether I should take his bragging seriously. (I am not the only one interested although you may be writing me off as a paranoid old man.). Maybe he's just a harmless braggart. Thank you very much, again, this whole thing is probably an absolutely trivial concern at the moment, but it's best to be safe, especially given the news lately. Indeed, as I am writing this up, I'm reflecting that this guy is just some harmless nutcase that I should have just laughed at when he told me he was going to put a bullet in my head because he saw a man in the locker room in a dress.”

I suppose our club bully is like club bullies everywhere. Those types are still found in police departments we see in the news. He seems to be a homophobe, coincidentally obsessed with me. Maybe what he says is bull. Maybe I should not take it personally. Although I hate to admit it, I'm just an elderly man who likes to go to the gym almost every day for the last seventeen or so years. The man lives in my neighborhood. What should I do? Nothing? Resign? Move? Stay? Get a gun? One thing I will not do, is tell the police.

ADDENDUM

Below is a complete record of the email with the highly regarded Intelligence Detective in the intelligence unit working directly for the Chief of Police regarding this case. He had agreed in a telephone conversation not to contact the person of interest or identify me because that might endanger my life. It was clear that all I wanted was the gentleman's name because the health club was not forthcoming with it. Yet he did contact the man and gave him my name, putting me in immediate jeopardy. His excuse, as the reader will see below, is that he could not identify the man unless he identified me to him. That is his reason for breaching our confidence. People make mistakes with all good intentions, and I would have accepted an apology, which he refused to give, and referred the matter to his supervisor. Therefore I shall update this file, as long as I am capable I'm doing so, for the benefit of the public and the law enforcement community. Since the person of interest is considered dangerous and now has my name and address, I am considering either moving out of state or arming myself.

Dear Supervisor:

Greetings and Happy Law Enforcement Appreciation Day!

I expected the Intelligence Detective to apologize to me for betraying my confidence in him by revealing my name hence my address to a man known as Bull, who said he was going to put a bullet in my head, and that after bragging to everyone that he was convicted and imprisoned for murdering two people, who said that he had been driven psychopathic in Vietnam. He likes to show images of corpses of unarmed people he claims he killed in Africa, and likes to voice his hatred for “niggers” and “fucking faggots.”

The health club would not reveal his name so I could ascertain whether Bull was a bullshitter or a violent offender making credible threats. I hoped the Intelligence Detective would discover and let me know his name if not his record. The Intelligence Detective promised not to contact the man, then suddenly changed his attitude and did just that.

The Intelligence Detective did not apologize for his mistake: He tried to justify his break of promise and referred the matter to you, therefore this.

I have no ax to grind with him. I am informed that he is one of the finest officers on the force and sits at the right hand of the Chief of Police. He is no doubt a great chap. I look forward to meeting him some day. I do not recall if we have already met.

I believe you and I have been acquainted in the past, therefore you would know that I appreciate the police department and have done my best to be of assistance to the community. I know of only one officer who does not appreciate me, a neighborhood officer whom I was informed was badmouthing me, calling me a “troublemaker” because I was reporting incidents others came to me with because they were afraid to report them to the police.

I believe the good Intelligence Detective has made an error frequently made everywhere in the world, even in this great country of ours. I take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the excellent service your department is providing, an excellence made obvious when our city is compared to countless others.

Of course there are two reasons for appreciation, the negative one being the likelihood of retaliation from officers who feel their lives depend on good reputation hence do not like to be criticized. I myself positively appreciate the improvements in service and only wish to be helpful in that regard.

There is something that should be added to your file. The Intelligence Detective was impatient with me when his attitude changed for reasons unknown to me, He dismissed my effort to mention an event I was giving as an example of why I wanted Bull’s criminal record checked. Officers have their hands full and are trained to focus on the current situation or suspect. I understand that, but I believe intelligence officers would take more time to listen and learn in case they do not know everything they need to know.

I was trying to tell him of a similar situation in Washington, D.C., where a friend of mine was threatened in her apartment  building on Embassy Row. All her new tires were punctured with a knife after she was threatened verbally, and then she was assaulted without violence in a grocery store by a neighbor in the building on Embassy Row. The man terrorizing her advertised himself as a friend of the mayor and police and as an award-winning rap artist and filmmaker. I infiltrated his group to find out who he really was. Police have much on their hands in DC with crime running rampant, with murders up 20%. The prosecuting attorney’s office has a backlog of several months. Police were not very responsive to my friend’s concern despite her family’s prominence. Her family’s attorney tried to get things going, to little avail, attempting to educate the police on stalking law. Research into the identity of the individual found records in three states. 

Finally, two police detectives showed up with a mugshot. Yes, that’s him. He has a warrant out on him. Great, that will save my friend from the risk of being identified. They left after about ten minutes because a murder had just been committed a block away, at Dupont Circle. My friend’s stalker was pulled from his apartment and taken to jail a few hours later. His apartment is rented out to someone else.

Good job! We appreciate law enforcement!

Hello Sergeant,

Here is my email file. I hope you will look at the gentleman's record for context. The problem here is that I had no direct witness to the threat, and that is one reason I did not want to file a formal complaint and just wanted to know if I should take this man seriously. Apparently yes there is a considerable record, but I do not want to subscribe to the search. Another person who was recently threatened and is well aware of the man's terrible conduct does not want to be involved but now that I have the name he will check with the military in re stolen valor. I perhaps supposed mistakenly that this kind of information was something police INTELLIGENCE would want on file, e.g. his claim of multiple homicides, possession of a gun. claim of possession of a closet full of heavy weapons on my avenue. As for the health club, he was kicked out for this kind of thing then let back in, there was a note on his account, he is costing them good will, so that's on them if something happens and this guy flips. He was let back in on agreement he would leave everyone alone. Not. Anyway, maybe some good will come out of your examination of procedures here. .

Dear Intelligence Detective:

Greetings! I hope this finds you well. I was hoping you would call me in response to my last email. No doubt you have your hands full with serious crimes, Miami Beach being what it is.

Regarding Bull, I'm sure you did what you thought was best given your long experience with dangerous criminals, and that you did it with some certainty that it would have the best possible outcome, that being the public safety. 

However, to protect me from contingencies, please confirm that, after we agreed on the record that I would not be identified to the person threatening to kill me and consistently harassing other people, and acknowledging that I simply wanted to know who he was so I could ascertain the nature of the person from whom the threat came and whether there was a remedy, such as an existing warrant, you allegedly called him at the gym and identified me. 

I base that information on a bystander at the health club who said the man angrily interrogated him about me after receiving "a call from a Intelligence Detective." 

I also request that you also provide me with the public record that you have on file on this matter. I believe there may be some information therein that might explain your apparent change in tone and tactic, from friendly and helpful, to suspicious and demanding, at least according to my perception, on our second call, when you asked if I had ever complained about Bull before. 

I am probably mistaken, but I intuited that a neighborhood officer who had for years bad-mouthed me as a “troublemaker” for doubting the quality of policing in my neighborhood might be responsible for the change in tone. I had my doubts about that officer because neighbors used to come to me and ask that I contact the police because the police were not doing their job and they were afraid of retaliation if they complained. Chief of Police M. thankfully addressed many concerns effectively, but things went slack with Chief of Police O., who said he had his hands tied by the so-called reform regime, but Chief of Police C. picked up the torch as the administration evolved, and with great results. 

I recall a relevant event that occurred several years ago. Persons said to be associated with Gotti Jr. were running a criminal operation in an apartment behind me, so I alerted the police. A swat team took care of that, and during the course of that bust I saw a celebrated member of the team pointing out my apartment to a neighbor in the building next door, inhabited mostly by undocumented aliens. When I complained, I was told not to worry, that the criminals therein were idiots. I might say the same thing if I wore a badge and a gun, but I do not have the respect afforded to police officers.

I have had very little occasion to complain since those days, and I assure you that I have never, to the best of my recollection, complained about Bull until he seemed to be having psychological issues and threatened to put a bullet in my head, and that was not the first time. If I am to be deemed a “troublemaker” for advocating improvements, it is a badge of honor, but I do not want to wear it in the morgue.

I may be mistaken about what happened in this case, therefore this.

I gave you the contact information of the health club who is aware of his trouble making so you could get his identity, let me know, and check his record. You got his contact info from the club, called him, and identified me. You had good intentions, tried to help, thanks very much,  but in my opinion, slipped up. You will not admit to any misjudgment or error. Thanks!

There is no case record. You asked for assistance, I believe we did the best we could without any witnesses that would come forward. We spoke to him, and he agreed to cease communication. You had no other records, no police reports, no witnesses, even the gym could not corroborate and side with any one person in this matter. As I have advised, if you receive threats from the individual, then please call the PD and file an official police report. That threat will be followed up with vigorously.   I have copied my direct supervisor on the email. This will be my last correspondence with you unless you have additional details that may warrant a criminal case.

Dear Intelligence Detective: Thanks for your reply and for trying to do something for us. Please email a copy of your case record. Not even an "Excuse me, I did what I thought best?" Thanks for his name.  He is lying. Gave me a lift home? Absolutely laughable if you knew the truth of his conduct.  Was it after he said he would shoot me in the head? Thank you for confirming that you identified me. You agreed not to identify me. You may have put me in danger. Who knows?  It is a policy issue that should be addressed. It goes to the question, Can police be trusted? And why so many witnesses say, "I don't want to be involved.". Another officer has advised me to resign from the gym if he is not booted, as he was before for the same sort of conduct with others, I am sure you do a great job overall, and that this kind of slipping is not unusual, so is the sort of thing the Chief of Police is interested in, maybe send some sort of memo around or whatever is done Like, When someone complains he is threatened by someone who says he has murdered multiple people and is out of prison for two murders and has a cache of heavy weapons in his closet, and the informant asks not to be identified, do not identify him, conduct an investigation.  Best, David.

Good afternoon David, I hope all is well. Yes, we are indeed working on several cases daily. The individual that you were having issues with has been identified as: SLH. We spoke to him at length, and he advised that he has no intention of talking to you in the future in any derogatory manner. He was surprised and baffled that you felt threatened in any way. He advised that he even gave you a lift home in the past. He assured us that he would no longer cause any issues for you in the future.. There is no way of not advising Stephen on what this was about other than telling him you felt unsafe in reference to his actions. If you wanted his name, he would have the same right as you.  I see that you also sent this to the Chief of Police.  If you feel unsafe once again in the future, based on any new threats, then call the police and complete an official police report, then follow up with a restraining order. I’ve never complained about his bully-rhetoric until this time when he said he was going to shoot me personally in the head (with a gun he did not display) as if he meant it because he had seen a man in the locker room with a dress on, for Christ's sake. He has some idea that I am important when I'm really a nobody, and has approached me often. It could be free floating anger. He did appear to be getting more and more aggressive lately, and I figure maybe he was off his meds One day I overheard him mention he had been subpoenaed for something. For $25, he advertises that he will demonstrate how to kill a man in one blow. He said the objective is not to ever fight but to kill or run. An airline pilot was pleased with the lesson. Let me know if he is a nobody criminal wise, and please accept my apology for taking of your time with what may be nonsense.  It is kind of a shame that nobody else dares to step forward. Should I just ignore this conduct? At 331 PM  May 7, Sunday "Bull," whose full name the company and the police have not disclosed, stood with two others in middle of the fitness Club repeatedly declaiming "Fucking faggot!" in very loud voice. About whom, who knows? Did management tell him I complained about his death threats and hate speech? He talks like that often. He's been kicked out the gym for that kind of conduct. Too bad he wasn't with Golds because the owner fostered that behavior and then many franchisees did not renew. Some members are afraid to go anywhere near where he's at so they're deprived of the use of "his" area of the gym, yet at other times he sucks up to the very people he's defaming, for instance, at great length with the new training manager. He claims to be an ex-con for doing two murders and likes to show pictures of corpses of unarmed men women and children he says he murdered in Africa. He seems to be a classic homophobe. I had never said a cross word to him although he always engaged me in his bullying language, and then, out of nowhere, he said because he saw a man with a dress on in the locker room on what he called 'Fag Day,' he said he's going to shoot me in the head with his gun, that after intimating to me the day before that he had a weapon in a black bag. I guess he's a homophobe obsessed with me, but I'm just a straight almost 80 year old man who likes to come to the gym almost every day for the last 17 or so years. What should I do? Resign? Leave town? Stay? Get a gun? The authorities can't help until there is witness to the threats or someone is hurt or killed.

I'm probably a little paranoid. There have been multiple shootings at gyms over the years and I remember some of them very well, especially the murders at the Coral Gables gym. I used to work out there

PS Chief of Police, just a note for the homeless squad, The man known as Bull is not the gentleman who was banned from the gym because he was sleeping on the mat all the time. He claimed his mother was killed by terrorists in the 911 attack and that he was going on a secret mission to kill one of them. He had left a bag of hard drives in the locker room locker of his research for that mission. He claimed he had the powers to walk on water and invited people to watch him do it. On Inauguration Day he was at the Subway on 5th and said he was going to kill President Bush at a distance. I think he was arrested. He wound up living on a citibike and frequenting the park, where he said he was receiving magnetic vibrations regarding the possible destruction of the planet. In contrast to the alleged veteran who calls himself Bull, he was always respectful, at least to me, and I had observed him being very kind to homeless people. I have not seen him for some time.

Thanks, Chief of Police. I don't know if he's homeless as he has a wife he says depends on him or he would kill people right away and go back to prison in Florida to an old men's wing because young men no longer want to let them have it in the ass. He tells people he has been diagnosed as a sociopath because he has no feelings after being confined in a cage in Nam jungle for months. He has a bike he secures with a heavy chain which he says he also uses in fights.  He has been showing pictures of dead Africans he claims he killed as a mercenary. He likes to show pictures of him with other black belt karate associates. A pilot told me he paid him to teach him three karate moves that will kill a man because the objective is never to fight but to immediately kill or to run. I didn't worry about him until directly threatened to kill me. Friends tell me to get a gun. He said he has a cache of weapons he bought up north, but that doesn't make sense because the best place to get them would be in this state. 

Can he be real? He calls himself "Bull." Bullshit? I guess he does sound like a delusional homeless man. The police know how to handle people like that, and I am sure glad I am not a cop.The manager of Crunch, Anthony, would know his personal ID. There have been multiple complaints in the past about the guy, and the New York office is familiar with him but let him back in. Best, David

I saw "Bull" yesterday. He looked terrible, like he's on his last legs. Note that he has claimed to several people that he has a gun in the black bag that he carries. He likes to put his hand in the bag and glare, but nobody has actually seen a gun. Maybe he's a pathetic phony. Still, better safe than sorry.
