Why Peterson Field Guides are Best

There are so many bird and flower guides, how do you know when you have the best?

For 30 years, I've been leading nature walks that include pointing out and talking about birds and wildflowers. I've watched folks show up with a variety of guide books to help them. But most of the newer guide books lack the one thing a beginner needs. An arrow that points to the mark that makes that particular bird or flower THAT BIRD OR FLOWER and no other!

As a beginner, you just don't have an "eye" yet for the details. It's all about the details. Markings, edges, colors, slight differences that make a big difference. To get a fast and efficient lesson on how to identify, buy Peterson Field Guides (or get them from your local library). Peterson uses an arrow that points, in the sketch, to the spot on the bird or flower that makes that bird or flower that exact item. Looking for the exact mark leaves less room for confusion in identification.

For instance, there's a bird called the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Many people find woodpeckers confusing, but if you look at the sketch in Peterson's guide you'll see a arrow pointing to the red under the throat of the bird. This marking makes the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker what it is. No other woodpecker has this mark. But it's something beginners may not yet focus on.

There's a guide for every living thing--including non-living such as rocks. The publisher is Harper Collins Publisher.  You can enjoy all and many of the other guide books, but make sure one of your guides is a Petersons!

I acquired no payment for these comments.

I was a beginner back in the 1950s. Among the books that my grandmother had on the farm was a book identifying birds. I remember using it. I never recall having any trouble identifying birds in Wisconsin.

But for the 45 years that I've been here in Texas, I'm finding that I have to go to the Internet, What Bird, and other sources to identify what I'm seeing.

Just the other day, my partner's brother sent me the photos of of a bird grabbing a frog, he called, Dinner.

I had a devil of a time finding it so that I could tell him that it wasn't a great blue heron, because I know a great blue heron when I see one since I lived in Wisconsin.

When I finally found a picture of a little blue heron that I come across before, that was the bird that was enjoying the frog.
