Writing is about so many things, being able to use your imagination, being observant, taking note of the small things, the tiny details that make a story real. These are the things help to bring it to life. Using these details to string together sentences and paragraphs that make the reader see what the writer sees in his minds eye.
I have been writing short stories, flash fiction and novels for years, with limited success I might add. I have no illusions, I still have a lot to learn before my writing craft is molded into something special. I have learned one very important thing though; to write you need to be especially brave, to dig deep into your own personality and allow your emotions to spill onto the page. What’s brave about this you might ask?
Well I have learned from feedback from my readers that when I am honest and let this happen, I am exposed, I have allowed the world, those who read what I write to see me, to see the real Joseph McCloskey and get a better understanding of what makes me tick. Not that there’s anything frightening to see there, but people generally don’t drop their guard. We only allow those that are close to us just so close, there is always something, some part of us held back, kept to ourselves. Is this for security? I don’t know, but very few of us really know the inner workings of the people around us. Sometimes they will do or say something remarkable, something out of character that will show us another side to them and we will instinctively re-evaluate our perception of them. They have faltered let the world get a glimpse of their character.
When you write you have to let it all out, when something is held back the writing is stilted, lacking something. Now that I have learned this it might sound like I have cracked it, I have the formula to write some incredible prose, but alas it’s not that easy either. Having the concept, the story in your head is one thing, putting that eloquently onto paper is the real art.
