Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is on a different day each year. In 2012, it is on February 21st.
I love pancakes! And, for that reason, I love Shrove Tuesday. This day is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

Shrove Tuesday was, and probably still is for many Christians, the day when one gets shriven--that is, goes to the Priest, confesses one's sins, and is forgiven. One can start again with a clean slate.

At the same time, Shrove Tuesday is the day when one eats up all the things in the house that can not be eaten during the season of Lent. Hence the eating of pancakes, butter, maple syrup and maybe sausages and or bacon.

For many, the restrictions of Lent may have been circumvented and the confessions of sins on Shrove Tuesday may not be as vigorously pursued; but, the ritual of a pancake supper is pursued in many a home and church.

In many churches a pancake supper may be a way of raising some much needed funds for the church itself or for some charity. This is a good thing.

Our priorities have changed along with our view point in this day and age. But something is still there, some remnant that reminds us of our Christian roots and heritage. Many who do not go to church still remember Christ's teaching and try to follow his example in our day to day lives.
