Hermit Thrush Gives Flute Recital
4/15/2012 4:33:50 AM

How much we look forward to the returning birds of spring and their beautiful melodies. The winter wren with his involved and long song--such a strong voice for such a small bird--returned some weeks ago, and we have been enjoying his intricate melody for some weeks now.

Yesterday the hermit thrush returned and gave us a short flute recital. Though he must have been tired after his long journey he let us know that he was back and we gave thanks for his safe return.

As his name suggests, we don't get to see him much but his song is enough to let us know he is here, and we are glad.

Another player of the flute is the veery but he returns much later and leaves early. How these birds are able to do all that they have to do in such a short time we don't know but build their nests, lay their eggs, nurture and fledge their young they do and then they and their song leave us for another year.

A lone phoebe was here early because of our early hot spell he keeps calling for his mate but she has not returned yet. We hope he doesn't give up. We get such enjoyment from the fact that they build a nest on a light fixture on our house and we get to watch all the activity and dedication that they show. Some years they have two lots of babies and one year they had three because of a really early start!

We get a lot of enjoyment out of the anticipation of the arrival of the birds but even more out of their actual being here so that we can see and hear them all summer long.
