The Republicans have girded their loincloth for a major offensive. The opposition party is wounded and bleeding. With pit bull tenacity the conservatives ready themselves for the final assault, a run at the controls in 2012. So it is in the world of two party politics and so it should be. It is what makes this country the greatest democracy in the world.
There is a ground swell of interest surrounding congressman Ron Paul a constitutionalist who made a surprisingly good showing in a fleeting bid for president in 2008. The Republican Party, along with Paul and the upstart, Tea Party, a ground roots movement without an established leader, make up three blocs of the latest conservative thrust. All three lay claim to traditional conservative values. The big question is whether they can mesh in time to win the white house.
Coincidently 100 years ago Teddy Roosevelt decided to make a second run for president after serving in that capacity from 1901 to 1908. After taking a four-year reprieve he challenged the incumbent Howard Taft a fellow Republican for the nomination in 1912. He formed a third party, “Bull Moose” and won, but split enough Republicans to loose the general election to Democrat Woodrow Wilson.
There are many issues that need real answers before these three conservative factions can collectively act as one. If they can find a charismatic leader that can bring them together, they could win in 2012. As for me, they need only answer one. The key issue in today’s world will always be home security. If the governing party can’t protect me from mass destruction and I’m dead, then nothing else matters much.
