Can this really happen in the United States of America? 3/8/2010 5:35:36 PM
A suspicious white van was left unattended in Time Square just prior to the new year celebration, causing the NYPD to scramble their bomb squad. In a city paranoid with fear of a 9/11 recurrence, terror worked its lethal effect once again. Trucks loaded with conventional explosives have proven to be devastating delivery systems throughout the Middle East and in this country as well. Who could forget the Oklahoma City truck bombing that took 168 lives while injuring 680 more unsuspecting people. By now this kind of attack is nothing new but consider the consequences should a truck with a nuclear explosive be deployed in a major metropolitan city? Loss of life could be in the millions rather than hundreds. But is such a dreadful thought possible?
The know-how is for sale. Today’s terrorists have become sophisticated murders. It is only a matter of time before they are able to collect or purchase the technology needed to blow up an American city. The world has some idea of the damage a small 10 kilotons nuclear blast would cause. The city of Hiroshima Japan was a city of 304,000 when the 13-kiloton atomic bomb was dropped to end WW11. Conservative estimates place immediate casualties at 140,000. By 1950, five years after the blast, 200.000 deaths were attributed to the explosion. It’s easy to do the math, if a comparable devise was detonated in a city of four million. Two million people would die within five years. It will happen somewhere in the world sooner or later.
