I've just discovered that an article I wrote nearly seventy years ago is available on the internet, making me one of the earliest writers on race relations. Alas for the name changes required of women at marriage, I never knew that an article I published under the name of Hamvas, my first husband, is available on the internet. Someone else discovered it for me. Published while I was still in college, in a now defunct magazine called Common
Ground, it dealt with the difficulties of white college girls in becoming friends with black college girls, how we tended to be unnaturally polite and never to argue with them, never to feel completely at ease with them. It was published twenty years before the Civil Rights movement. I think I can safely boast that I am one of the first Caucasian writers to tackle the subject.
Not that it brought me any joy at the time. My family did not rejoice in the publication. I think they felt attacked.
Now at long last I can celebrate properly that long-ago triumph, my first publication in a national magazine.
I am indebted to an old college friend and his daughter for researching this long forgotten piece.
