White Out 9/7/2003 7:36:33 AM
This morning I awoke and looked out of the window, there was nothing there, everything had disappeared. The cottage below us was gone, the fields and trees that stretch out towards the Hawardian Hills had gone. Just an eerie white world out there. The first thick mist of the autumn had descended upon us like a big fluffy white cloud.
Slowly it started to thin out, the outlines of the cottage and our cherry blossom tree faintly appearing, still shrouded, as seen through a veil.
9.15 am we walked down the path to our car and marveled at the spiders webs and the caterpillers cobwebs in the hedgerow, all glistening with microscopic droplets of mist, shining like little diamonds and etching the fragile and intricate beauty of the webs; the finest of gossamer lace.
As we drove through our country lanes, we saw this lace adorning all the hedgerows and trees.
We were startled when a flock of tiny birds suddenly flew up out of a hedgerow and across our path to the other side, which brought to mind a tragic accident here recently. A three year old girl riding her pony was thrown and killed when the pony was startled by some small creature darting out from a verge.
As we drove towards the town, we were surprised at the number of motorists approaching in the other lane, who were driving without any kind of light, fog lamp or otherwise. A silver car emerged from the fog, he was totally invisible until he was almost abreast of us. A lot of people here seem to have the strange notion that switching on their lights will depleat their batteries, so they take a chance on their safety instead!
By midday the sun was out and all the fog had dissipated, it was warm and the sky was blue and filled with fluffy white cumulous clouds again. I like cloud watching and often see pictures in them. Today I saw a baby elephant running through the sky with tiny trunk outstretched and a tiny fieldmouse with big ears!
We visited a friend who had invited us to collect some more apples from his orchard and went home loaded down with damsons, squash and courgettes too. I am going to be busy - again - more Apple Pie!!!
