Logic and the Lack Thereof

Why does simple logic seem to be an alien concept to so many people?

Though I consider myself a strong optimist, I must admit that I often teeter on despair for the future of Mankind. The fact that I am not the first to do so, and that the world has been steadily going to hell in a handbasket ever since Adam was dumb enough to let Eve talk him into eating that apple is of some comfort…but really not that much.
That the vast majority of the world’s population seems never to have heard of logic…or, if they’ve heard of it, simply never bother to apply it…is cause for further despair. Organized religion, to a large extent, totally ignores it. Anything in Christianity that defies logic is neatly countered by simply tossed into that bottomless chasm called “Faith.” Jesus rose bodily into heaven. That’s nice. How? Exactly where is Heaven? Faith, my son. Faith.
Barrister Humphrey Umboga sends you an email wanting to share $25,000,000 with you if you’ll just send him a check to cover some of the transfer costs. And people send it to him!!!! They have to; if it didn’t work, he’d have given up on it. And exactly why or how Barrister Umboga selected YOU for this honor is never questioned. Faith.
McDonalds conducts a game wherein all you have to do is spell the word “Hello.” Every time you buy something there, you get a letter. You can win $20,000,000 just by getting all five letters. Simple! And you and millions of others rush off to pick up a Big Mac or an order of fries, or a coke, or whatever and get your letter. That they produce millions of “H”s, millions of “E’s, tens of millions of “L”s and only one single “O”—which is quite probably tossed away by someone not playing the game, thus saving McDonalds from giving out a cent—never, ever occurs to anyone.
Publishers Clearing House runs ads showing happy recipients of $1,000,000 and assure you you can be the next winner. Well, of course you can! But will you? Logic, people, logic.
TV infomercials roll out endless parades of ecstatic, satisfied customers lauding whatever it is being pitched. Home shopping channels thrive on flashing sparkly gee-gaws and assorted schlock with “lifetime” guarantees, and people can’t get to the phone fast enough to snap them up. Have you ever once wondered if their lives really did a total turn-around when they bought that combination hotdog cooker and air freshener? If it is “not sold in stores” have you ever wondered why? Logic, people. Logic.
State lotteries and Las Vegas survive on the simple theory that “Logic be damned!”
Your email spam box is crammed with offers of $29.00 Rolexes, and medicines absolutely guaranteed to cure any disease known to man. And again, if these come-ons didn’t work, they wouldn’t still be running them.
People are duped and swindled and scammed out of billions of dollars each year on the promise of something for nothing. But, dear Lord! Just a tiny bit of logic could prevent 99.999 percent of the misery millions of people experience when they do NOT use logic. And I fear that part of me…uncharitable as it may be…feels that anyone of truly sound mind who is gullible enough to fall for these schemes deserves what he/she gets.
Faith is a wonderful thing. But it is not a substitute for logic.
Now if you will excuse me, I must get this check to Barrister Umboga in the mail.
