The helipad shown above is located atop the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics main building. It’s right in beautiful downtown Iowa City, Iowa, home of the U of Iowa, the Hawkeyes, the Black Angel, Prairie Lights Bookstore, (Happy 35th birthday!) and much else that makes Iowa City the Athens of the Midwest. I landed on this pad thousands of times in the twenty years I flew for the UIHC AirCare, a total of 3,200 times with a medical patient aboard my helicopter. The title for this post appears to refer to flight instruction, albeit with a little grammatical hiccup, my use of the adjective good instead of the called for adverb, well. But I intended the adjective this time. Landing those patients over the years felt a lot like I was flying ‘good,’ that is to say, flying in a manner that made best use of my skills for the benefit of someone else. It was to their good therefore, that I flew much of the time. Of course in my Air Medical flying the outcomes were not always ‘good,’ in fact the outcomes were often not good at all. Still, the intention to intervene and do what was possible to help each patient either survive, or to reduce their morbidity, the extent and duration of their injury was always there.
