Finding My Voice 1/7/2014 8:23:27 AM
....is discovering who I really am.
I did some reading over coffee this morning about “voice” and what is it. I have always been curious about what it was and how to establish it. Turns out I don’t have to work on finding it, I just have to write. Sometimes it’s easy to spot but sometimes not. But regardless of how I get there I will get there.
AS I think about the things I’ve written I find myself looking at these things from a reader’s point of view. What would I, as a reader, like to read? What genre interests me most and what do I most often gravitate to? I like how to books. Sometimes its mystery suspense even a little comedy. But regardless of which genre, I like a well written story that takes me heart body and soul into that setting for a while. So as a writer I have the best of both worlds.
When I have written a piece set it aside and then go back and read it, I am often surprised because the thing I see over and over is a hint of humor.
So for me finding my voice is sitting alone, without any distractions and write what comes from my heart. Most often than not its humor. And if I can stay true to who I am deep down, I can stay true to you. It’s when I try and be someone I am not I become a tortured soul.
