Chapter one  -

That night on the seventh floor of the hospital it looked like a ghost town compared to earlier when it was full of people and activity. The only people that were now there besides the patients were the nurses.

Looking in from the hallway you looked into a room of darkness, and the hint of someone sleeping, but looking from within the rooms out, you could see dimly lit hallways and heard quiet goings on that proved there was someone ‘out there’ somewhere.

To discover this was merely to summon them with the bedside buzzer. Fortunately for the magicians the little patients slept peaceful totally unaware of what cool surroundings they would wake up to. The funds for the renovations came from one special man. His name was Carl Reynolds and years earlier he had been a patient himself. When he was there, there was nothing fun to do during his stay, and he so wished there had been. Now that he was out and able to change things he did it thanks to the residence of cedar city they were able to do it in the time the kids were sleeping. That was the magic of the town- their magic.

The next morning breakfast was delivered as always between 6:30 and 7:00 am. The kids were just getting up when their trays were rolled in. Cartoons were turned on and the morning meds were given out. But once all that was done they all wanted to eat at the table and start the fun day that was planned. As the four charges sat at the table they noticed two more trays. But didn’t see anyone else in the room

“Ms. Morris why are there two more breakfasts?” Sara asked pointing to the trays as the others began eating.

“Remember the two children that came to visit yesterday?”

“yes,”

“They will be joining us for a while.”

“oh okay, what’s wrong with them?" Another little boy asked.

“They are getting their tonsils out.”
“Ouch.” one little girl said rubbing her throat.

“But they get ice cream after right.”

“That’s right, Tommy” The nurse said as the door opened slowly. It was the two kids and their parents.

Without warning the kids that moments ago were sitting around the table were up and greeting the newest playmates. Although they had a tight schedule, the nurse in charge did give them a little leeway because today was the great unwrapping of the new children’s wing.

As they ate, the door slowly squeaked open with sounds of a big booming voice as sights of a stranger appeared. He wore a clowns outfit with big floppy shoes and a big red nose that made noise when you squeezed it Not to mention the famous endless scarf that went on forever. And the best part he acted every bit the part.

In his arms he carried a bag full of goodies. Everything from story books and coloring books to art supplies and puppets. Not to mention things that were from the various rooms on the other side of the tarp that hid their new world.

As they all reseated on the reading carpet he began pulling out the assortment of books so the kids could look for the story they wanted to read. When they all had a book he chose the story he would read first and the young child sat in his lap. After taking turns reading their story and sitting on the clowns lap There was one more story to tell, the story that would lead to the surprise that was about to happen. This story would be told by the nurse as she took her place in the chair next to the children and the clown.
