It's time for Number 9 4/26/2021 9:26:18 AM
Revolution 9, the longest track ever produced by the Beatles, is a perfect background soundtrack for the current moment in the evolution of America. John Lennon said it was a piece about how revolution would sound, a portrait of what he heard walking down the street, and whatever you wanted it to be. Some critics called it an avant garde masterpiece and others called it a nonsensical disaster. Fans thought it was a clue in the “Paul is dead” mystery. It certainly seems to evoke a stream of consciousness that could be a picture of something happening in the street, words that for me always bring to mind the Buffalo Springfield classic about protest in the late sixties and early seventies. We have that again today. For the first time in many years we seem to be moving forward toward a new level of understanding of the problems we face as a nation. There are many voices speaking out from many different points of view. We might be moving toward a better world, but we can’t be sure. That is what Revolution 9 says to me. The many voices talking over each other in the midst of sound loops, machine gun chatter, sports crowds, and all of the arenas of the world where change comes and pushes us forward. It is a picture of the zeitgeist on the move to a different level of consciousness. Let us hope that we can take the progress that been made since Revolution 9 was recorded and move it forward towards the fairer world that we all really want to see.
