Final edition of the Proof for John 6:51-68 Proof that Jesus was Speaking Literally in John 6:51-68
Many Christians read John 6:51-68 with the impression Jesus was speaking Metaphorically. This Proof is an attempt to show all Christians, the Words of Jesus can only be taken Literally.
There were 3 groups of people present at the time Jesus Spoke these verses. the 5000 Jesus fed the day before, 400-600 of His disciples and the 12 Apostles that were with Jesus for the last 3 years.
As the Words of Jesus were upsetting all three groups, the 5,000 started leaving Jesus. The 400-600 disciples were leaving too. The key to how many disciples left may be found by the fact that Jesus turned to the 12 Apostles and asked them if they were leaving too. Logically, it may be safe to say that the number left should be less than 12-15 since it would not make sense if there were, say 25 staying and Jesus would be asking the 12 Apostles, who were His most loyal followers for the past 3 years, if they were leaving too. I may be even bold to suggest that ALL 400-600 disciples left.
The future of the Church rested on the decision of the 12 Apostles. The Plan of Salvation was at stake. Jesus was leaving their decision to leave Him by using their Free Will to decide. Had the 12 Apostles decided to leave, this would have been the result.
1- There would be no Church after the Death of Jesus.
2- There would be no New Testament.
3- There would be no Confession or Holy Eucharist.
4- There would be no Church Fathers or Saints.
5- There would be no Catholic Mass today.
In summary, if the Twelve had left Jesus, there would have been no Church and no New Testament. The evidence that Jesus was speaking Literally, when He said that we must Eat His Flesh and Drink His Blood, is the fact that He was willing to risk losing all of His disciples, including the Twelve Apostles, rather than say, "I'm only speaking Metaphorically."
