The Way A Writer's Mind Works??? LOL 6/20/2004 5:01:52 AM
An exploration of the way a writer's mind works. Yeah! Right! Sure! I'm not sure, Dear Blog, that I want to share the way my mind works. I mean, there are days when I make a schizophrenic look sane. I go around when the people in my head are talking to me and I answer back out loud in different tones of voice, depending on my mood at the time. But there's a rational reason for it. To me, the characters in my mind, those in my books, are as real to me as my friends. Of course, I talk to them! People talk to their friends, right? It's rude not to.
Speaking of friends (and social situations with 'real' people), the other day, I wore my new black tee-shirt with the title of my first book, Unwilling Killers, emblazoned in red on the back. But I guess I should have paid more attention to what was going on, as there's been a judge down here who makes criminals do public penance. It's not severe, really. Just a tad embarrassing, I'm sure, for the criminal. They have to carry signs and things in public, stating their crime.
Well, there I was, wearing my tee shirt with Unwilling Killers on it, and, forgetting I had it on, waltzed up to the crowded photo counter at a local drugstore to get my new pictures. Suddenly, the crowd drew back en mass, and everyone evacuated the counter, standing a good two feet behind me, whispering. Hubby, who was with me, got a kick out of it. Well, since I'd forgotten I had the shirt on (I'd never worn it before), I was puzzled at the crowd's reaction as I turned to look at them, wondering why they'd withdrawn so quickly, but took it in stride, paid for my pictures, and left.
Then, when we went over to the restaurant, where we'd eaten many times before, I noticed we were getting usually conscientious service. The waitress, instead of deferring to my husband, kept deferring to me, hoovering around the table, asking if everything was okay? If I liked the food? If it was cooked the way I wanted? If the service was okay? If there was anything she could get for me?
Well, of course, I was flattered. But annoyed too, since she kept asking me questions while my mouth was full of food. When she finally stepped away from the table, my husband whispered to me that he thought my shirt might have something to do with her attitude.
Naturally, I started laughing! I mean, do I look like an Unwilling Killer? I'm a fairly small person, barely 115 pounds and stand just under 5 feet 5. Even if I was so inclined to do damage, I hardly have the build for it... at least without a weapon. And what would be the motive for me doing harm to a waitress... bad service? ROFL. No way! I guess the opportunity was there, but in a room full of potential witnesses, that would have been risky.
But on the way home, I started thinking about it. Maybe people didn't understand I was just trying to do PR for my first book. I was getting attention, all right, but not exactly the kind I'd hoped to inspire. More upsetting too, was my forgetting I'd worn the shirt. After all, my title was on the back. I didn't see it. I'd never worn the shirt before.
And after that, I've never worn it again. But I'm sure glad I didn't have the title of my second book put on the back to, like I almost did. I can just imagine how people would react if they saw OBSESSED AND UNWILLING KILLERS. Mercy! I could've been lynched LOL.
