They say that you should write everyday. Something. Anything. Transcribe the banter in your kitchen! Or describe the interesting individuals that come and go at the coffee shop. Start a journal. Rant and rave about things (but be careful not to talk about work too much!). Just be sure to write something - ANYthing - everyday.
I find that my writing ebbs and flows - but not like a tide. Not steady and predictable, but in starts and stops.
While working on my sequel I made admirable progress in the first several months, pounding out page after page with nary a writer's block in sight! Well, maybe an occasional 'nary'. But it always seemed shortlived, and at times, if I became too stuck in a rut I would skip ahead several chapters and write about an entirely different aspect of the novel. Later I would go back and fill in the blanks or maybe even excise the entire roadblocked chapter.
I've been doing Freelance work. This is considerably different from writing my novel, as it involves research and homework and style - style other than my own particular style.
First it frustrated me to no end. "I should be working on my novel!" I'd lament. But now, I realize that I've enjoyed it, especially since at this point in my life I actually have the time to devote to the research and homework. It involves learning as well, and I for one should never stop learning.
But it does distract from my novel.
As does this Blog. I should be working on my novel now, shouldn't I? Well, I'll let it marinate a while and then, when I'm good and ready I will jump in with renewed enthusiasm and pound out the last 1/4 of the book in record breaking time!
It helps now that I have an ending. I wonder how many writers write the ending first...
Speaking of endings... thus ends my second Public Blog, for what it's worth.
