WRITING ONE O - UH-OH
11/28/2005 11:47:23 AM

What do you do when you have time on your hands, and articles due, but you don’t feel like writing?

Well, you write something other than that which you are supposed to be writing. Of course.

I think this is because when you are supposed to be writing something in particular it is too much like work. It is suddenly a job. I am supposed to be writing an article because I will get paid when I write it.

THIS however, I will not be paid for. This work of art is, well, neither work nor art. Simply put, it is an expression, an exercise, whatever nonsense that comes to mind.

I would like to make it funny. I would like to be Dave Barry for a day. Actually, I would rather just be me but have Dave Barry’s money. It would be nice to have Dave Barry’s sense of humor, too. Perhaps his intellect would serve me well.

I am not an Intellectual. Nor do I play one on TV. I often feel like Otto, that Kevin Kline character from “A Fish Named Wanda” who pours over books on philosophy but doesn’t really understand them; who uses big words but uses them incorrectly. I’m like that guy.

BACK ON TOPIC
Yes, my writing, that’s what this is supposed to be about but instead I’m all over the charts here. But at least I am writing and that is what’s important. This is a good warm-up so that I can hit the literary road running and crank out a Pulitzer Prize Winning Masterpiece of such import that all of the newspapers and magazines in the country will want to swoop me up and pay me handsomely!

My problem is my lack of focus. My life, like my writing, sometimes lacks focus, too. It lacks direction. It meanders yonder and fro, to hither and yon. My ambitions and interests lead me in so many different directions that I never seem to land in one place long enough to finish…

What the heck was I saying anyway?

Oh, my unfocused vision.

I have spent the last 30 years of my life working, putting myself through college (at least the last six years of it), delivering subs, working in a garage, registering ER patients and, lastly, facing death daily in the Office of the Medical Examiner.

But if I’d had my way, I’d be making movies and playing in bands and writing books and recording music and taking pictures and…

Wait a minute, hold the phone, stop the presses… I do do all of those things!

Perhaps my focus isn’t quite as myopic as I thought - or would like to think, if I actually knew what myopic meant.

I'm kidding. The fact is, my focus is anything but myopic, it’s more like a shotgun blast, scattered over a vast array of targets, all of which are inherently competitive and require not only talent but being in the right place at the right time.

Well, there's my 500 some words. That wasn't so hard.

Now, my novel awaits...
