Blogging...hmmm. Should I try it? 3/26/2006 9:13:08 PM
This is a communication device I have seen used successfully by many Internet experts. I have also seen some not so successful attempts. The most interesting thing I have noticed about blogs is that some people expect to be answered when they write their blog. I believe that is a common misconception. A "blog", short for "weblog", shouldn't need to be answered. I think Captain Kirk would have been very surprised to receive a reply to his "Captain's Log".
So...I will use this area to communicate my thoughts...to myself and to that nebulous area beyond my keyboard and computer monitor.
I have been writing most of my life but have never been paid for publishing, outside of an occasional newspaper article. My chosen career (did I choose it or it chose me?) is in computers, but my love is science fiction. I sometimes think the two are linked. At least 50% of my fellow programmers read science fiction -- a much higher percentage than most of the rest of the world. My theory is that our daily use of rapidly changing technology forces us to be more open to the technological possibilities of the future. Science fiction that was written decades ago is reality today. The science fiction we read/write today is only a hint of what we will know in future decades. My only regret is that I can never live long enough to witness all the marvels I know will someday be part of normal life.
