Word Play on SCAT 11/9/2004 4:29:05 PM

The cold has left my memory quite blury. I am at Somerville Community Access Television (SCAT) recording "Word Play," a special on spoken word related to play. Doug Holder is hosting it and Lisa Smith is producing from behind the scenes. I've worked with Lisa all the other times I've been on SCAT and I like working with her.
The prose writers do their thing first. Steve Almond is the best known of us with a couple of successful books out. I had heard him a couple of weeks before on NPR reading his book, "Candy Freak" and I expected something equally playful given that play is the theme. He instead chose to read a very morbid story that has only a tangential connection. Others stay more in theme. Deborah Preistly reads several poems about her cats, Moo-Moo, Uh-Oh, Booger, and Tiger, and Lo Gallucio performs “Queen of Mars” with her face framed in a black clothing and a black wig. Much of the evening is a blur due to the cold as well as the all the stretching and meditating I am doing on one end of the studio so to ensure my cold does not interfere.
My new eyeliner pencil is awful. It doesn't leave a clean black line on my grease paint. I make note to buy a new pencil before the next gig.
I perform "Sonny Holiday's Subway Magic Show." I am more conscious that I am on camera and make sure that my arms never block the view of my face. You can do that on stage because live theater is a three dimensional phenomenon like sculpture; but television is a two dimensional existence
