"Some aviod understanding because true understanding requires us to act on what we have learned." There are many reasons people avoid trying to understand a situation. Sometimes it is hard to understand life's lessons, other times it requires us to look introspectively and many of us just don't want to know ourselves that way.
So we avoid understanding because when we do understand we must make moral decisions about what we have learned or act on it. Both of which can be just as difficult as trying to understand in the first place.
