There is a difference between having faith and living faith... As I read Jerry Engler's latest poem, "Sand River," my thoughts were turned to my dear friend, Guesno Mardy, who runs the orphanage in Haiti where 7 of my children came from. Jerry's poem talked about the shifting sands and currents of life, and about the ever-present hand of God being held out to support us through those times, if we reach out to grasp it.
Over the past few days I have been watching my dear friends in Haiti suffer as they deal with their 2 1/2 year old son's kidnapping on Sunday. I know that if I were in their shoes I would feel as though I was sinking deep in the depths of a strong river's current...being pulled away from everything I thought was safe. I would feel as though my foundation was shifting and sliding, like sand underfoot.
And yet... Guesno remains stalwart, resolute, and calm...asking first how my daughter Ahna is doing with her many health issues before addressing my questions of how he and his family are coping. He is a man who reaches out his hand to God and takes His hand and walks on, unfettered by the drifts and currents and blowing sands of life. He knows that there is nothing that can't be overcome with God's help. His faith brings me courage to face my own trials in life, for he truly lives his faith...
It has been three days and their son has not been returned. I ask for your prayers and faith to mingle with the faith and prayers of the Mardy's that their son will soon be returned to them in full health of body and mind.
