SADD
1/17/2011 2:35:36 PM

Only those who suffer from SADD can truly understand what a devastating illness it can be. Not unlike depression, it can suck the life right out of you! I'm thankful for the love and support of my family and friends as I struggle through the effects of lack of sunshine for long periods of time.
SADD…I could write volumes on it! But then who’d read it? Who wants to know what it feels like to be trapped in a black hole that is slowly suffocating you? Who cares that even though winter only lasts a couple of months; there are those of us to whom it is an eternally dismal abyss! Would anyone want to try and understand that with SADD, simply putting one foot in front of the other all day long can be completely exhausting? If you’ve ever suffered from depression, then you understand what I’m saying! SADD is real…it’s not merely feeling a little out of sorts in winter’s harsh grip. It’s more like being squeezed so tightly you can’t breathe most of the time. Tears are never far from the surface, and feelings of hopelessness increase with each passing day. I’m not good company during the months of January and February; it's something I struggle to control! Being around the ones you love when you’re suffering with SADD sets them up as targets for mood swings, and to me that’s simply not acceptable! But how can one separate themselves from loved ones a few months every year? Thankfully, like depression, SADD is being openly talked about now giving families the opportunity to try and understand what’s happening to the ones they love. It takes incredible patience and loving support to help the SADD sufferer make it through weeks of absence of sunshine and frigid temperature. Going to the tanning salon in January and February once or twice a week helps; I’ve been doing it for years. But unfortunately this treatment could unleash another terrible demon…tanning beds do cause skin cancer! That said, one is left to decide the lesser of the two evils! If you suffer from SADD, I know you can relate. I guess if you’re wealthy enough you can escape winter every year and never have to endure the horrible pain associated with SADD. But unfortunately for most of us, that’s not an option. We have to try and endure it, and remember to breathe…just one breath at a time! Spring will come and with it promise and hope! For me, writing provides a glorious escape! Whether I’m working on a story or a poem, I leave SADD in the drawer of my desk while I soar away! It’s the very best therapy there is!
