A Hurricane Is A'Coming

At least I know that we still have the capacity to prepare for something if we know for sure it is coming. If you were in Jena yesterday, you probably experienced what I imagine was being replayed in most little towns in Louisiana and Mississippi. Cars were lined up at the gas pumps, the stores were buzzing with shoppers gathering staples, bottled water, and batteries, while roads were clogged wit
h people getting ready for Hurricane Issac. From above, it must have resembled an ant bed after being stirred with a stick: people scrambling to get ready for potential danger to come. We still have it within us to prepare for imminent disaster; sadly, we don't seem to be able to stay the course spiritually when it comes to preparing our hearts and lives for the coming of our Lord. That was exactly Jesus' point when He discussed the lack of spiritual understanding church folk have concerning discerning the times and seasons in Matthew 16:3. The problem is a lack of patience. Sustaining a state of readiness isn't easy, not even in worldly terms. If we had to scramble each day to restock our hurricane closets and extra gasoline cans, we probably would lose focus there too. In fact, isn't that the very reason we are scrambling today anyway: because we aren't ready? If we had been keeping our stock full and batteries fresh, we could have spent the evening playing with the grand kids or watching our favorite program (perhaps even reading our Bible), but instead we were out fighting the "crazies" for a tank of gas and bottled water. Let's not let human nature rob us of our power in these last days. The beauty of being a Child of God is that we do not have to fear or doubt when the gross darkness that is coming upon this world settles around us. We do not have to panic when the trials and tribulations of these last, dangerous times, as we face dangerous men, rage against us. We are wise virgins, oil in our lamps, ready to be used of God when the bridegroom comes. This is a time of rejoicing for us, not a time of scrambling or panicking. Righteousness and peace is just around the corner as Shiloh is coming soon! While the rest of the world is turning on one another to try to get ready for something it doesn't understand, we can rest in the knowledge that we have been prepared all along. If you are not prepared for eternity, do a little scrambling now, then stay prepared in all patience because your joy will remain full if you do.
