Do You Look At The Stars? 5/24/2013 9:24:24 AM
From the author of the BEYOND Series. Young Adult. Science Fiction. Romance. When I wrote BEYOND I wasn’t really thinking about science fiction. My thoughts were more along the lines of…what if something like this happened? What if a girl was walking her dog and she was accidentally picked up by a space ship? And what if she was whisked away on a wild, five-year adventure in the stars? Stranger things have happened, right? And, what if there was a really hot guy on that space ship…a guy who couldn’t help but to be fascinated by her, when no male on Earth had been fascinated with her so far?
So no, I wasn’t necessarily thinking about science fiction. It was more about a girl who played clarinet in the marching band falling for a warrior from another planet. Logistics.
In BEYOND: TWO SUNS, Aimee is much older than that high school girl who started out on a great adventure. If you have not read BEYOND, forgive me for the spoiler alert I am about to divulge. It doesn’t give away too much. At the end of Beyond, when Aimee’s five-year adventure is over, she returns to Earth and leaves the man she loves. (sigh-sniffle).
Now here I am, the writer, engaged in the long gap between book one and two. Does Aimee reunite with Zak? Will their love overcome such minor obstacles as a 90000 light-year separation?
During that intermission, I found myself walking outside at night to the most remote part of the yard—out where there were no streetlights and no noise. And I would look up…at so many stars. Some I could recognize. We all know Orion’s belt, and the Big Dipper. On certain nights, I could even identify Venus or Jupiter. But now I gazed up at all of those flickering orbs and imagined what Aimee must be thinking when she looked up at them. Somewhere on one of those tiny flashes of light was the man she loved. Suddenly those stars didn’t seem so far away. In her mind, she could zoom in. She could picture them as planets. She could envision their rugged terrain. And somewhere, she could imagine Zak standing there, staring up into space…searching for her.
I look at the stars differently now. They don’t seem like bantam lights millions and millions of miles away. When I see them, I like to imagine a hot guy like Zak standing there, looking back. But hey, that’s what makes me a romance writer.
Do you look at the stars? Do make wishes on them? Do you imagine someone looking back at you? Can you identify constellations?
