Was Bryce Williams a Difficult Employee?
Surprised and devastated, no one could believe Bryce Williams, a reporter, killed two of his co-workers. At first glance, you want to know what made him do it. According to various managers at the TV stations they stated, “He was a difficult and disgruntled employee.”
Call me crazy, but I had to take pause and ask—was he? As an African American individual, I had to wonder if Bryce was suffering from racial posttraumatic syndrome. I know that term doesn’t exist but why doesn’t it?
I’ve been retired for over ten years and I still have flashbacks of when I was working. As the only African American department head, I suffered through humiliation, demoralization and overt racism similar to President Obama. At times, I was bitter, angry and wanted to lash out, but I couldn’t afford too. Like so many of my counterparts across the United States, I was the first African America to hold a managerial position and had to rise above the blatant and subtle racism I experienced on a daily basis.
We’ll never know unless someone investigates what Bryce experienced as an African American reporter. Did he receive mentoring? Did he have to endure a hostile work environment on a daily basis? Did his co-workers say he was aggressive in his mannerism? Did his co-workers view him as a quota hire? Was management supportive of having a minority work at the station?
I am not excusing or condoning him from taking the lives of two people. However, some African Americans face racism that festers to the point where they can no longer contain the anger, bitterness, hurt, and disillusionment. Explain then, why was Bryce a difficult employee?
