Sometimes Americans think, "Oh, a cultured person, that's somebody who is an elitist, an intellectual snob, maybe someone who listens to Beethoven and Brahms and drinks fine French wines." Jesus Christ, however, was cultured in a different, more profound sense. He was cultured because He was not driven by self-interest or selfish desire. He knew the difference between lasting beauty and passing taste, eternal values and temporary accommodations, truths that are worth dying for and those that are not. And those who follow Him will heed the words of the Apostle Paul: "Whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4: 8).
