What's that noise? 5/17/2017 12:22:08 AM
A strange thing that happens when night time comes is that our senses seem to come to life. The sun sets, the skies darken and everywhere becomes still and quiet. We lie in bed, sometimes tossing and turning, but eventually we drift off to sleep, only to be awoken in the early hours of the morning by a sound that we maybe at first don't recognise. We lie there, listening hard and it is then that your senses become suddenly heightened and the sounds become magnified.
A creaky floorboard or stair, an open window blowing the curtains, the radiators cooling down; all of these sounds could be described as eerie, and can all give us a sense of fear and send our hearts racing. Many of us can lie awake for hours just listening to those curious little noises that stir up in our minds at a most inconvenient time when we need sleep.
Sometimes the sound of a cat meowing on the path outside can echo through your mind, or a fox howling, which uncannily bears the resemblance of a baby crying; even car alarms set off by a cat walking nearby can play tricks on our minds and very often will keep resounding in our ears long after it has stopped.
Some of us feel so frightened hearing these eerie sounds that we naturally bury ourselves under our covers to muffle the sounds, but even that doesn't help us to drift off. It is a strange thing that many of us can associate with, and we can lie awake for hours simple listening out for nothing.
And so the next time you hear a creak or a thud or an unexplained noise in the middle of the night, you never know, you may just be hoarding a creature from another planet in your closet or your attic.
