DID YOU EVER REALLY HAVE TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND?
Did you ever have to make up your mind? I think the answer to that question has to be a resounding: YES!!! Every single day, thousands of times we make decisions about the action we will take in any given situation. Do I turn left or right? Should eat ribs or a salad? Is it cocktail hour anywhere? There are philosophical theories that expound that every time you choose a door, the universe splits and both choices are made. If that's true, there are surely an infinite number of jumbled up universes, all filled with the cacophony of the choices we make.
Then there are those choices where we really have to make up our mind...I mean in a way that affects other people around us, other people's ability to make their own choices. They can be choices with a rather obvious answer like: Should I spend my paycheck on a night on the town or to buy my children food? There can be choices that aren't so obvious like: Should I stay with a man I don't love because it's better for my children?
Theories abound about the reality of choice. Does it really exist? Certainly, the landscape of our lives impacts the kind of choices we may make. A child born into a war-torn country must make different kinds of choices than a child born in a land of peace; a person born into wealth has different kinds of choices available than the choices of one born into poverty. Chance certainly plays a part in dictating the person we become, at least partially because it impacts the kind of choices that will be available for us to make. The luck of being born to kind, loving, stable parents as opposed to being born to parents who are abusive, angry, drug-addicted, or suffering from their own tragedies is certainly a matter of chance, but the reality that the past shows us is that such chance does play a part in crafting the choices that will appear as one wanders through life.
But in the end, we are all the sum total of our choices, both good and bad. I try to make good choices. I had the luck of the draw when it came to parents and family, but all of us have experienced pain in our lives, and to me the pain has been a source of growth and inspiration. My choices all have to be about helping the world. I don't feel happy if I'm not creating something that might better the existence of man. That's what I try to do with my writing. It's what I tried to do with my law practice. My choices have to be predicated on the hope that what I do will be good for the world. That doesn’t make me a better person. It is simply what makes me happy and satisfied with life.
So creating this blog is my latest choice. I hope that at least one person will smile or be comforted or inspired by some thought I expound upon in this little corner of my life. That would mean it was a good choice for me and the world.
