To Drive or Be Driven 6/1/2018 1:01:13 AM
Types of business
It seems to me that there are, essentially, two kinds of businesses. One kind is referred to as “market driven”. You identify what market your product or service has the best chance of appealing to and, then, upon entering that market, let it drive your sales. As a published author, I am often advised how to improve my sales by targeting a particular market. Frankly, I disregard such advice. I write what I want to write. If there is no established market keen on “consuming” my work then, so be it.
The other kind of business creates a product or service that drives the market. Usually, it drives a market that, hitherto, did not exist. The telephone, automobile, airplane and a plethora of contemporary high-tech gizmos are examples. As long as meddlesome governments do not interfere with their characteristic ineptitude, this kind of business has a good chance of succeeding. Otherwise, they should be allowed to fail.
Speaking from experience, I managed a small manufacturing business for 14 years that ultimately failed. No agency stepped in to bail us out...nor should they have.
Fortunately, the primary purpose of the business had been achieved. Namely, to secure my mother’s financial well-being for the rest of her life.
