Christmas Mist 12/24/2018 5:53:19 AM
Musings on the memories of Christmas. Christmas Mist
Christmas memories hang in the air like a misty glow around the icon of the Christmas experience. The memories have to start somewhere. You know, those Christmas morning snapshots in your mind that can bring such intense feelings from your heart. Mine start on a staircase staring down into the living room where the Christmas tree stood so tall and sparkly, my big brother beside me, my mother and dad already up making sure the Christmas morning scene we’d see would be perfect. Then there’s the year our dog Lady chased Susie’s cat Friskie up the tree leading to a terrible fall that broke almost all of the antique Christmas ornaments my mother cherished so much. I still have some of the hastily glittered-up replacements that go on my tree every year. After all, a tree has to have sparkle for my siblings and me. We are my mother’s children. The thing that jumps out most from what I think was my twelfth Christmas is the feeling of great responsibility that comes from wanting to make Christmas perfect for someone you love. My little sister Becky wanted a toy farm set. I got to help put it together and arrange it under the tree. I was part of the other side of the Santa Claus experience for the first time. Becky got her farm set, but she also got a brass piggy bank that had evidence of Santa’s presence on its surface. She’d left a plate of cookies covered with confectioner sugar for the man in red. He ate the cookies and left a print. She never cleaned that print from the bank. It was proof that the Claus really had been there. Everybody’s got the memories, some good, some bad, but all of them a part of the mist of Christmas that brings light to the end of the year.
