Florida International University has a new interim President. Jeanette Nunez does not deserve to be named Interim President of Florida International University.
She has many many years of experience as an adminstrator but that's not good enough for this position. She has a Master of Public Adminstration but that degree is not designed for running a research university.
I know.
I have one.
The presidency of a university should be reserved for scholars with a record of scholarly excellence.
Usually the best candidate for a university presidency is someone with a terminal degree, a long publication record, and experience in academic administration.
The University of South Florida is also blessed with a total nobody at the helm. She has no terminal degree, no publication record, and no experience running anything not even a Burger King.
Back in the 1980s my dad was Vice President for Medical Affairs at USF in Tampa. His boss was John Lott Brown.
President John Lott Brown had everything. He had academic experience as a Provost at Kansas State University and ran a prestigious center at The University of Rochester. Beside his experience, his long resume included a publication record and a PhD from Columbia University.
If our horrible system of higher education could recruit more scholars like Brown and my dad Florida wouldn't be the laughing stock of state university systems.
