Reaction to the blog post "alleged" causes another reaction.
I deleted a post this morning from someone I don’t know. There was a lot of ranting about my comments regarding the use of the word “alleged” and the guy finished by calling me a moron. It was written at 1:44 a.m. and I assume the guy was drunk. I HOPE he was drunk because no one who calls themselves an author should be that incoherent.
Moron. It’s not the worst name I’ve ever been called (and I have to admit one of my first reactions was “I’ll put my Master Degree up against whatever ya got any day, dude!”) but, surprisingly, it hurt.
Someone I’ll never meet (and wouldn’t want to) called me a stupid name…and it hurt.
Then I thought about all the kids who are being called vile names every day because of their gender identity. And I thought about my wonderful neighbors who have been called vile names all their lives because of their skin color. And I was ashamed I allowed myself to feel hurt, even for a brief moment, although it did remind me that the adage “sticks and stones…etc.” is wrong. Names DO hurt.
Speaking of moronic, name-calling can best be described (by me…it’s my post…I get to play Webster here)! as “activities engaged in by people who are too stupid or lazy to argue a point.”
I was called a moron because I commented about due process and the presumption of innocence in this country. And dang! I’m in great company, with founding father James Madison looking back to the English Magna Carta to include the concept of due process in the Constitution, and Benjamin Franklin and John Adams both championing the idea of presumption of innocence as part of due process using ideas begun under Roman rule centuries earlier and clearly laid out by numerous jurists, including French canonist Jean Lemoine, and Englishmen William Blackstone and Sir William Gallow.
I guess James and Ben and John and Jean and William and,uh, William (!) would be considered morons now, too?
BUT…the big takeaway, the scary, depressing takeaway was the realization that so many people have ceased to take the time to understand what someone is saying. They see a word or a phrase and go off on a tangent of rage. Communication and comprehension skills seem to be fading daily. Folks rant about things they don’t bother to investigate. People feel entitled to hurl insults at people they don’t know. Do they get some sort of feeling of satisfaction when they see their epithet...sent to a stranger...on a page? Too many people are using nasty names to deliberately belittle and hurt others, even though they accomplish absolutely nothing.
And that, to me, IS truly moronic.
