Hope in a crowd of strangers

Observation: I posted a photo of jonquils blooming in February on Facebook a few days ago and quickly received more than 40 likes or loves. Since I doubt it was my brilliant photography I have to assume it was the message…if jonquils can bloom in February (incidentally, they made it through last night’s 40 degree drop in temperatures) then there’s hope left in the world.
Thinking about this led me to the movie "Love, Actually
and two similar scenes that remind me that humans can be surprisingly wonderful. Spoiler alert for those you haven't seen the movie...and if you haven't seen the movie....what's wrong with you??!! 🙂
The first is Jamie’s (Colin Firth) proposal to Aurelia (Lucia Moniz) in the crowded restaurant. The reaction of the patrons is a huge round of applause when she accepts.
The second scene features the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) and the caterer, Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) exchanging their first kiss in what ends up to be a very public forum- a school Christmas show- where a very surprised audience cheers and claps and show their delighted approval of the match.
What makes both scenes so perfect is the reality.
People DO clap for others in situations ranging from marriage proposals to a neighbor rescuing another neighbor’s cat from a tree. And it’s amazing how good those feelings can be coming from a group of strangers who find themselves sharing an unexpected moment of hope or love.
It’s hard these days to believe and remember it, but I think the majority of human beings still opt for hope and love over despair and hate.
We’re currently stuck with a president who is doing his best to destroy the country and the planet thanks to the worst case of envy toward others I’ve ever seen. If anyone remembers a previous post, I ended leaving a job I liked because the envy from another was so intense it was making me crazy and depressed, so I know first hand the pain when envy destroys.
We need to realize (often) that there are so many more of us doing our damndest to keep hope and love alive. We need to share good moments when we can while not avoiding the bad we sadly have to realize is happening so we can change it.
Hey! If the jonquils can weather the …uh…weather…so can we.
