Do No Harm

I keep telling myself not to engage in discussions about politics or religion with trolls on other folks’ FB pages but I ended up responding to one yesterday. Let me ‘splain.
I’ve been following David Ross Lawn’s page/reels for about six months now. He’s a musician, singer, and photographer from Scotland who gained more than 100k followers with his wonderfully quirky posts showing David in dresses. Great dresses. Vintage (I swear he raided my closet from the 70s and 80s when my clothes were what I called “early Stevie Nicks”), Renaissance garb, gothic, clown, you name it…he’s worn it! Joyfully. And he’s not shy about expressing his opinion of MAGA and Trump and so-called Christians.
Yesterday he posted this comment: “Let’s be clear: Conservative Christianity in the US has never been about Jesus. It’s been about control, racism, and patriarchy.”
I normally don’t scroll through the comments but for some reason wanted to see the responses…most agreed with his statement. Then there were the trolls. And I had to respond to the one who said, “I don’t think a guy in a dress knows much about Christianity.”
I was pretty soft in my response, which was,” I guess you must be talking about Jesus, who would have worn a tunic about knee-length, with a belt and a cloak…like the majority of men wore in that era?”
His response was to tell me I was being facetious since it was now 2026. My response (not my best…I was tired) was: “Fine. So I guess all the priests wearing cassocks and robes are also not Christian? Christianity has nothing to do with what a person chooses to wear…it should be about how we treat one another…and denying someone the joy of wearing something fun and sharing that joy with others is not something Jesus would do.”
No response.
What got me…what gets me... about all these folks who claim to be Christian is the complete lack of the message. Which, actually, is the message of the majority of organized religions in the world…follow the Golden Rule. Or, what I call the Cliff Notes Wiccan version, “Do no harm to others or the planet.”
It bothers the fool out of me that people claim to follow a religion and then act in a ways that are the absolute opposite. The crop of White Christian Nationalists who are racist, and homophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic, who don’t give a damn about the poor or the earth and apparently also in favor of pedophilia. Do they truly believe that “heaven” exists only for rich, white men who are citizens of the United States of America? And what New Testament Gospels are they reading that provide them with the idea that hating one’s neighbor is what Jesus preached?
How do they miss that the only folks Jesus was angry with were the hypocrites who claimed to be good while doing their damndest to destroy other human beings (or, in some cases, engage in some greedy behavior at the temple)? He definitely wasn’t condemning anyone for dressing against the fashion norms of the day or for speaking out against corruption, greed, and racism.
If Jesus had appeared at the SOTU address raising a sign that said, “Black People are Not Apes”...would they have tossed him out?
If Jesus had been shielding a woman from being tear-gassed by ICE agents, would they have repeatedly shot him until he died?
If Jesus’ mother, Mary, at age 13, had been trafficked to the Epstein mansion…would they have abused her and laughed about it or later sheltered those who did from justice?
What is it about “Whatever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters, you do to me,” they fail to understand?
If they can’t be pro-active in their dealings with others, maybe they could just shut up and go with those Wiccan Cliff Notes:
DO NO HARM TO OTHERS OR THE PLANET
