Legacy

We leave one whether we plan to or want to…a legacy. This week reminded me that a legacy can be a blessing or a curse.
Not many people can leave behind the kind of artistic talent one is able to hear or see while streaming or on a CD or DVD. And very few folks have the kind of business savvy and financial sources that Dolly Parton made use of so well.
Her legacy is beyond measure, from the performances and composing she’s most known for but more important for the incredible gifts of kindness and generosity she showed that really will impact generations to come. So many thousands of children were educated and consequently able to provide for themselves and others. They pass that on to the next generation. Unless one is an avid reader or writer, the gift of literacy can be ignored but it’s vital for mental health as well as helping inform millions. Her tremendous and wonderful legacy could take up an entire book!
On the other hand, the legacy of those in power in the country is terrifying. How does one explain to one’s grandchildren that they followed a man who committed murder, to take bribes, to commit rape, to assault children, to ignore 250 years of history, to ruin the beauty of a First Lady’s vision, to scoff at the health of his followers, igore the cries of children and sailors alike, to demean anyone who didn’t worship at his shrine. He will leave a frightful legacy that brings harm to generations and generations. He has already cost countless lives. Sadly, his legacy also could fill the pages of an entire book, but it’s one none of us would want to read.
The vast majority of us will leave a “small” legacy. Personally, I would like it said, “Because of what she did, the world is a little better.”
We can achieve that small, good legacy by simple acts each day. As basically a hermit, I try to push my legacy through writing. When I do interact with people I always try toI ask about their day and say just one thing that makes them smile. Takes a second, doesn't scare the animals and I like to think the smile gets passed forward.
Legacy. It’s past time for us all to stop and think about what we’re leaving behind.
