I did not want to find you

          I was intent on looking forever

climbing mountains

crossing seas

following that tug of heart

          hoping

          wishing

          praying

that around the next turn

          you would be there

behind the next door

          I would find you waiting

But I did not want to find you

that was a mistake

a terrible mistake

because,           you see

if I had not found you

I could be content

all of my days

          looking

          searching

          hoping to find

that shining pearl

          that sacred love

                    I always dreamed of

like the heroic explorer

          searching for the fountain of youth

          no, not in vain

          though he never found

          what he was searching for

He lived with hope

          and determination

          and a dream to follow

I was not meant to find you

I would have been content

with my safe, lonely existence

          spending endless hours

          aching for your touch

          with only the hope

                    of one day finding it

Don’t you see

our grave mistake

          our fatal error

Why have we been so foolish

to see the treasure in

in each other’s eyes?

For now that we have found that gold

          now that we have glimpsed the love of eternity

          and held it in our trembling hands

Now, you see

          It is ours to lose
