Though we're stumbling
clueless through the universe in a bewilderment of time,
some stubborn harmony persists
even in the most wretched heart
or the fiercest blast of bomb or shell
sending bone and flesh sceaming
skyward. And, oh, what cunning
sequences unfold in each blind cancer
cell devouring the vile and the innocent
with equal justice for all. Deceit, of course,
has the purest of forms. And what would
we know of the world without pain? Even death has a harmony--
no random, formless chaos here as
the fallen fructify the ground where
others soon thread, all following
sequences, all bound by form from
nothingness back to nothingness
until a tiring sun, exhausted at last,
crashes and falls and a new one rises.
