Enough Already

I wrote this in the year 2000, not realizing that its prophecy would become chillingly real in less than a decade.

Enough Already!

Merchants' cries
inundate the mind and mail
with easy credit:
pay as you go,
never-ending debt.
People fall for it,
spending tomorrow's rent for
today's toys.

Mortgagors charge
thrice the price
for the American nightmare,
tossing in penalties, and
perjuries, swelling up
cholesterol-laden arteries
till the ticker tape reveals
it's time to slow down,

or go down.

Government jumps into the fray,
taxing every headache
till it falls apart, and
its owner hits the streets
in search of someplace --
anyplace --
to protect him from the reign.
Meanwhile, rich politicians
slap at each other's hands,
then scramble after the gold
dislodged, in chaotic,
hungry fervor.

Estates of the dead
gush liquid remains into
the cesspool of greed,
only to be refinanced, refitted,
re-fed to the living --
again, at thrice the price.
Where does it all go?

It goes into the six-figure income
of a chief executive:
Money Vacuum with
soul-sucking pockets, and
more rooms in his house
than my city has streets.

Credit is the center of the
Corporation Cosmos,
its fiery flares
radiating death, and
slowly sapping the life
from all humanity.

Just say no!

There's a German economics professor at the University of Berlin who wrote books on this sort of thing back in 1997. I've heard him speak at lectures and it's absolutely brilliant. The problem is in the system itself. It is all based on debt. Even the fiat b/s money printed by the Fed is borrowed by the Treasury at interest! Essentially, if there were no more debt, there would be no more money, as money comes into existence on all levels, starting with central bank money all the way down to commercial bank money, by creating credit. When a bank makes a loan to you, they take your loan application, convert that into an asset, and using the fractional reserve banking utitlity, can now lend up to 30 times the original amount on your loan. Since the system is based on the creation of credit IN ORDER TO HAVE MONEY IN CIRCULATION, at what point do we run out of qualified borrowers? Well, we've already seen this. As a result of bubbles created by the excess creation of credit, i.e. money, there must always ensue a massive and painful devaluation of assets. Then the banks come running to the government for tax-payer assisted bailouts and the show goes on. Just one big scam!! Anyway, sorry for the long-winded comment. Great and prophetic piece this is.

My goodness - almost apocalyptic in it's chilling and sobering resonance and sooth-saying. Enough is definitely enough and I do hope the upshot of all this is that we can all get back to some sort of resumption of core values and reason at the end of it! Thanks for your recent reviews of my work, Dallas. It's very affirming when people take the time to read into a back-catalogue. I appreciate that, and am grateful. Kate xx

Very very relevant and timely! I'm still trying to get out of this credit card mess and slowly taking back my life, it is a deception and a prison. Great poem!
