As my profile says, I was a contest judge for many years. Quite often I would issue a challenge at the beginning, just to get things moving. This may seem arrogant to some ... but it worked. That's the whole point.
The Challenge
Why is it that your talent screeches,
a rusty gate upon the fence of ire?
Your pen declares your freedom, yet
your will remains chained to habits.
Your potential languishes --
a stained-glass window
that's never seen the sunshine.
You wail unto gods
in whom you do not believe,
weeping for your loneliness
in the midst of the crowd.
You hide behind barriers
that do not exist,
trembling in fear of an enemy
who does not pursue.
Drop the pretense --
Look for the light,
step out into the day.
focus and train your talent,
and write that story or poem.
Not in the self-centered
false piety of imitation,
nor flagrant abuse
of the rules of grammar,
but as if you expect to win.
Beseige me with intrigue,
dazzle me with action --
make me walk with you,
ride with you, feel your fear.
Make me live your pain, and
be moved to tears --
Write!
Pick me up from my depression.
Let me prowl your ethereal forests,
immersing my imagination
into the midst of your dreams.
Inspire me with visions,
empower me with words,
prod me with your pen,
into joining the foray --
Write, dammit! Write!
Timely for me, Dallas. I entered a 24-hr short story writing contest. Starts today at noon. I like challenges. We'll see if I bit off more than I can chew. Thanks for the inspiration!!
